For the past few months of being in lockdown and the passing of christmas I have been really missing where I am from. I’m Mozambican and I wanted to choose a song close to my culture to explore for this project. I chose the song Muthimba from Ghorwane. I'm not really sure what the direct translation is as its made in either Xangane, Ronga or Chopa which are traditional dialects. However the sound of the saxophone, the guitar and drums really bring up various feelings.

Marrabenta was a form of eclectic music in Mozambique. It emerged in the south of Mozambique at the end of the 1930s, but it wasn't until the 1960s that it became more popular. Marrabenta has been around before 1930's it just didnt have a name. Whilst under the colonial rule of the portuguese, Mozambicans weren't allowed to speak the local dialect and the Portuguese tried to diminish its culture and assimilate locals.

As a child I remember my gran telling me that Mozambique got its name when the portuguese explorer Vasco de Game arrived and asked a native Arab what the name of this land was. The local arabic tradesman didnt understand and thought he was asking what his name was, to which he replied Moz Albik. Vasco de Game had heard Mozambique, and apparently that is the story of how Mozambique got its name.
