He Joined the Army against Batista's rule (the revolutionaries), and played a leading role during the Sierra Maestra battles. 

Nevertheless, after the "Liberation Day: Triunph of the Revolution" was over, he started to not only disagree with certain Communist Ideolgoies, but he also made public his "controversial" opinion.

Later on, Huber Matos sent a letter to Fidel Castro where he stated that he resigned his command. Therefore, as a result of Huber's actions, Fidel Castro sent troops to arrest him for his "crimes" against the revolution. Lastly, as an extra fact, Fidel actually sent Cienfuegos to lead the arrest of Matos.

He basically became one of the leader of Cuba's revolutinary army, and was appointed the title of "El Comandante".

He was a top commander of Castro's Army.

After the victory of the Revolution during 1959, he was named "Head of the Cuban Armed Forces"

After certains series of events regarding Huber Matos arrest (see "Section 3: Huber Matos"), Cienfuegos disappeared during a night flight. The plane where he was traveling (which went from Camagüey to Havana) was never found; therefore, his body was never seen again. 

His disappearence (as any other disappearence under a communist of facist goverment) seemed kind of squetchy.
