- The Metis were entitled to more than 600 000 hectors of land under the deal that brought Manitoba into Canada in 1870.

- Of the 15 000 or so scrips handed to the Metis about 12 800 ended up in the hands of speculators.

- The railway made the city a gateway to the west as immigrants crowded through it on their journeys to claim a homestead.

- In 1885 the settlers had to travel to the west by horses and wagons. it was very dangerous and difficult but always got the job done.

- Many settlers began their westward trek in Winnipeg,many of them would not be able to survive there journey to there new homestead.

- The plaxtons were a family that was heading west from Ontario to take up the homestead in prince Albert,which is now know as Saskatchewan.

- After the (CPR ) had successfully been completed the settlers increased very quickly.

1)Some key difficulties the settlers faced in the prairies were ...........

- Traveling by horse and wagon was very difficult fr them to travel to one place to another and was very dangerous.

- They had to adapt to the life in the prairies which was very difficult.

I would not be able to deal with the conditions in the prairies and how the settlers had to leave because for me when doing something you have done for a while and then taking a new step is very difficult to control.

The farmers began to experiment with various kinds of wheat. The kind that would be best suited for the particular climate of the Prairies. In the 1890s the government discovered that developing the grain varieties of wheat was a grate way to populate the Prairies. After some time of developing they finely found a wheat that was able to ripen quickly and handle the harsh Prairies winds. The name of this wheat was Marquis.

Marquis wheat was a perfect solution the settlers dilemma. This wheat brought more settlers to the Prairies and helped to populate.

-It was a very small population until 1880.

-The land was suitable for farming and harvesting.

-transportation was by canoes across a river.

- 1880 was when the CPR was going to come through the community.

- In1907 the population was enough for Portage La Prairie to become a town.

- It has been made into a regional centre for western in Manitoba.

-It become a town in1905.

- It has been an economical centre, involved in farms in its area.
