Altogether, around 120 thousand Japanese civilians died immediately from the bombs, and thousands more later succumbed to radiation poisoning. The usage of an atomic bomb, at this point a recently developed technology held only by the United States, was a tremendous show of force, and soon after Emperor “Hirohito insisted that Japan surrender unconditionally” to the allies.
