World War II, beginning in 1939 and lasting until 1945, was a global conflict defined by its technical advancements in armaments and redistribution of world power. Beginning with their invasion of Poland, Germany, led by Adolf Hitler, ignored international policies and spread their conquest into surrounding countries. At the same time, The Japanese Empire, led by Emperor Hirohito, was spreading into mainland China and several groups of Pacific islands.

At first, the United States was only involved in World War II through sending munitions and other supplies to their European allies, namely Great Britain, while adhering to international wartime policies. However, Japan’s attack on the United States’ naval base at Pearl Harbor in 1941 escalated the calls for the U.S. to join the war. the U.S. declared war on Japan the next day, followed closely by a proclamation of war on the US by Germany and Italy.

Although the bombing of Pearl Harbor shoved the U.S. into entering World War II, beforehand there were conflicted opinions on whether the U.S. should get involved or not. Charles Lindbergh, an activist for non-intervention, argued that being forced to enter World War II against the will of the people “will have proved democracy such a failure at home that there will be little use fighting for it abroad.” Regardless, part of the United States’ motive for fighting in World War II was to push back against oppressive governments with American ideologies of freedom and Democracy.

One of the United States’ most infamously impactful actions during World War II was their dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Altogether, around 120 thousand Japanese civilians died immediately from the bombs, and thousands more later succumbed to radiation poisoning. The usage of an atomic bomb, at this point a recently developed technology held only by the United States, was a tremendous show of force, and soon after Emperor “Hirohito insisted that Japan surrender unconditionally” to the allies.
