Preparing for Your First Marathon

The founder of Motricity, a mobile data services business that he grew into a publicly traded company worth over $1 billion in 2010, Ryan Wuerch is now the executive chairman of DOSH, which recently launched their app that finds cash for consumers when they use their credit and debit cards while shopping, eating, and traveling.
Away from his professional endeavors, Ryan Wuerch is a long-distance runner who has taken part in more than 45 marathons over the course of his life.
Here are some tips for preparing for your first marathon.

1. Training should begin at least 20 weeks in advance of the event if you already work out regularly. Those who are working without an existing fitness base will usually require closer to a year to properly prepare.
2. Have a good running plan, how many miles will you run each day, from the time you start training up until the marathon.

3. Stretch before and after each run, especially as you start reaching toward longer distances in your training. You will be pushing your body to its limits, and the risk of injury increases as distances get longer. An ice bath after each long-distance run will help to soothe aches, pains, and muscle inflammation.

4. Mentally prepare for race day by downloading the course route and making note of important landmarks, such as aid stations. This will familiarize you with the route, while allowing you to create milestones based on the landmarks you find.

5. Always remember that it’s one foot in front of the other and every stride means you’re closer to the finish line.

6. Believe you can do it! Because you can.

Boston Marathon to Open Registration for 122nd Event in September

Dosh executive chairman and founder Ryan Wuerch spent three years developing the Dosh mobile application to fulfill a fundamental mission of connecting people via mobile devices and helping them get cash back. Also dedicated to personal health and fitness, Ryan Wuerch runs 40 to 70 miles a week and has run over 46 marathons, including running the most elite Boston Marathon nine times.

Registration qualification for the Boston Marathon is handled by the Boston Athletic Association, which will use the same registration process it employed in recent years. In order to qualify, runners must meet marathon time standards that correspond with their age and gender. Run times must be certified through courses administered by the USA Track & Field or the Association of International Marathons and Distance Racers. Admittance for the Boston Marathon does not follow a first-come, first-serve format, and only the runners with the fastest times will receive entry. Registration follows a rolling admission schedule for the first week, starting with the fastest qualifiers. For the first two days after registration opens, eligibility includes runners that meet qualifying run times for their age and gender by 20 minutes or more. Only those runners who better the time standard by 20 minutes or more may register for the first two days, followed by 10 minutes, and finally 5 minutes as space permits.

If there are remaining spaces after the first week, registration will re-open for all qualifiers for a short period of time. Only once this period expires does registration open on a first-come, first-serve basis, provided that the current number of registrants do not exceed the maximum field size.

Registration for the 122nd Boston Marathon will open September 11, 2017. Dates for qualifier rollovers include September 13 and September 15. Registration reopens for all qualifiers on September 16 and, if necessary, opens on a first-come, first-serve basis on September 25. The 122nd Boston Marathon will take place on April 16, 2018.
