Marvel's Diversity Brouhaha--Shari Beck

Recently the CEO of Marvel blamed fans' reactions against diverse characters as the reason for declining sales. Let's just say things didn't go well. This article addresses Marvel's Diversity Initiative (a drive to include more minority and female characters) and some of the controversy it has evoked. It nicely breaks down some of the critics' complaints, showing how other issues (like the difficulty in tracking online and other sales) complicate the matter. I would agree that the matter is too complex to boil down to a 30-second sound bite and that it's too early to tell whether the initiative is succeeding or failing.

Like, I know there's a thing called Infinity War… We need more war for all time?”. Many users were angry, writing that Pine should read The Infinity War comic before he begins to comment on and criticize it.

Growing up, Space Jam with Michael Jordan and the Looney Toons was one of my favorite films. It had Chicago's hero, Michael Jordan, teaming up with beloved cartoon classics like Bugs Bunny, to defeat the Monstars. Space Jam should be thought of as having lasting cultural signifigance. America's love of sport, in this case, basketball and the greatness of Michael Jordan, was crossed with the timeless hilarity of Looney Toons. What could ruin it?

Upon a more recent viewing, I was taken aback by Lola Bunny's use as a character. She is only there to be sexualized! A film for children has a female rabbit with human-female features, and her only purpose is to subtly bring into question ideas that "women can sometimes be just as good as men at stuff like sports," but even more blatantly, she is a device to give Bugs Bunny a romance. Her character is creepy, unnecessary, and misogynistic. If there is a Space Jam 2 with contemporary NBA players, the film should desexualize Lola and give her a role which is larger than giving young boys arousal.
(Ethan Friedman-Brauner)

It is incredible what David Lewis has done on research with characters in comic books and providing for refugees who seek sanctuary in the United States. It is true that characters of comic books normally come from a different planet or in such case as wonder woman from an island on earth, and would in many ways classify them as immigrants, which is incredible to think about. Also along the lines of Ms. Marvel, who is a Pakistani-American which allows the empowerment of girls and immigrants as well. It is great to see things such as this happening and especially great in terms of empowering people through comics.

(Hai Yu)

The Punisher is an unconventional character because his actions are neither completely typical of a hero, nor that of a villain. Though he gets rid of society’s criminals who are hard to catch, he does so in a very violent way. On one hand, The Punisher gets rid of criminals instead of sparing them only to just have them come back and do more harm to society. On the other, his killings can be ruthless and the methods he uses border on often illegal. The hard question is whether he is killing people to improve society, or satisfy a thirst for blood. The Punisher might even be considered a necessary evil. (Maria Carrera)

Wonder Woman made a statement about gender bias in comics revolutionized the comic book world for a period of time. In the 1950's as feminism died down, so did Wonder Woman. Her character slowly started to develop into the social constructionism at the time. As the 1970's rolled around, feminism began to make an appearance in society again and so did Wonder Woman's original character. Today, it is still a constant battle between the sexes and Wonder Woman still stands tall.

(Courtney Mason)

I remember the collective geek-excitement when Batman vs. Superman was announced several years ago. Fresh after a thought-provoking, gritty Dark Knight trilogy, DC fans' mouths watered over the prospect of an intelligent, sleek film focused on conflict between Batman and Superman. With such an epic premise, how could Directer, Zach Snyder screw this one up?

Isn't it sad to think about the naivety of youth? Watching Batman vs. Superman was similar to receiving the "wrong" birthday present, even though you made it extremely clear to your parents that, yes, you did want that 250 cc go-cart because "bikes are stupid". BvS:DoJ begins its assault on childhood dreams by constantly trying to feel as established as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie is almost three hours, it is confusing, and plainly goofy and forced at times. Marvel endures such success because they take the time to develop their films and characters. Instead, Batman vs. Superman felt more like a corporate venture to establish a film series than a loved and cared-for comic book adaptation.
(Ethan Friedman-Brauner)

Hollywood is current moving forward to female-first superheroes like Wonder Woman, but where are the different sexualities? Usually men superheroes, are play by heteronormative men who are buff, strong, straight, and very masculine looking.

Within five years (2015-2020) over 30 comic book movies will have been released. 2017 will see 9 comic book movies alone. The sharp increase in comic book movie production exemplifies the immense popularity of these types of movies in current pop culture. It’s a similar occurrence with the sudden increase in Young Adult novel film adaptations after movies like Harry Potter and Twilight did so well. Now, the Young Adult film adaptions being made are barely being talked about in mass media. This is probably due to too many studios trying to make any somewhat popular YA novel into a movie. The same situation has not yet hit the comic book movie market, but it is a continuing risk. The risk of people becoming tired of comic book movies will only continue to increase as more and more comic book movies are made.
(Maria Carrera)

Recently, more young women have been appearing in action films, book, etc. Young girls are rarely shown as heroes in programs that are targeted towards general audiences. In the Netflix series, “Stranger Thing”, Eleven was always intended to be a girl playing a super-powered star character. It was something new, to have a young girl be the main focus with all of these powers. Writer and director, Bong Joon Hon intentionally made his central human character a girl in the adventure film, “Okja.” Young girls are oftentimes portrayed to be the ones who need protection or rescuing, but Bong Joon Hon said that he wants to create the opposite.

-Kaitlyn Massin

She's girly, intelligent, and powerful; three elements that are pretty uncommon for females in fiction. Based on the readings from this week I think that Harley Quinn and Batgirl portray similar traits as well. Too often females are portrayed as weak or unintelligent, but thanks to these female superheroes we can somewhat break those stereotypes.

She then jumps around in the story trying to understand her parents’ lives, which are “epic in scope, and her own.” In her graphic memoir, she writes about the Vietnam War and what happened after the fall of San Gon, as well as her parents’ decision to escape the country. They boarded a boat with other families, however the captain became incapacitated and her father learned how to navigate the ship using the stars. He guided the boat to Malaysia. She goes on to discuss her life in refugee camps and the ups and down that she encountered when her family moved to the United States.

Guy Delisle's images in this memoir greatly depict the main character Andre and his feelings of being trapped in this room. Day after day, week after week, and month after month he is trapped and forced to conduct the same monotonous routine everyday. These images and this memoir comic in general clearly portrays the feeling of despair and monotony yet still somehow have traces of humor.
(Frankie Shebby)
