The setting is a constant and doesn't change which makes the changes of the boys seem even more extreme.
The island is "roughly boat shaped" with the tide going backwards. A boat is a common representation of civilisation. The conch - Rules/order.  When Piggy is killed the conch is also destroyed and rules and order end on the island.
Piggy's glasses - Rescue.  Reason?  Seeing clearly.  All reason ends on the island when the glasses are destroyed.  
The island (boat shaped with the current going backwards)
Fire - Rescue/help.
The pig's head (Beelzebub) - the Devil. Simon (Chris) and the pig's head has a conversation in which he states "fancy thinking the beast was something you could hunt and kill...I'm part of you". Level-headed the whole time but does have his times of temptation (helps to kill Simon, wants to kill a pig - "Ralph too was fighting to get near, to get a handful of that brown,vulnerable flesh.  The desire to squeeze and hunt was over-mastering".
Realises the reality of what they have done when they kill Simon and see the Naval Officer.  "Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man's heart"

Creates the significance of the conch.  This is destroyed when he dies. At this point the island descends into chaos.
Piggy's glasses represent hope for rescue and reason. This is foreshadowing, as by the end Roger kills Piggy by pushing a rock onto him.

Stays the leader and in power.
Starts out as an English, proper choir boy.  Jack Merridew -> Jack the Hunter -> Jack.  Also Chief.  The change of name is symbolic of him losing his humanity.
At the beginning of the novel Jack cannot bring himself to kill a pig.  In hesitating where to stab it, he lets it get away.  However by the end he is the ring leader in the death of Simon (stabs him) and convinces everyone that Simon has taken on the form of the beast.
