An island during fictional WWIII. There is a war going on in the outside world and the boys of prestigious families have been sent away on a plane, which is then shot down by a missile. This was an attempt to escape the war, but a reminder that the boys are still surrounded by war. The arrival of the parachute man is a reminder of this.
The setting is a constant and doesn't change which makes the changes of the boys seem even more extreme.
The island is "roughly boat shaped" with the tide going backwards. A boat is a common representation of civilisation. This is a symbol for humanity going backwards to savagery.

Simon (Chris) and the pig's head has a conversation in which he states "fancy thinking the beast was something you could hunt and kill...I'm part of you".
