There was only one way of educating children and every child was expected to learn specific things at specific times. Those who already knew what was being taught were reprimanded for knowing and expected to act at their grade level. Corporal punishment was common as well, as Scout was whipped on her hand during her first day of school. Also, many people did not value education and it was not essential for a child to succeed in life. Most children were expected to help their families at home and place helping their family before their education. In the modern day, corporal punishment has been abolished and education has gotten better about letting gifted children move ahead or learn things at their level. There is more value placed on education as now it is essential for success and most jobs require at least a high school diploma.
