Waiting upon me
Let your life be a deep, quiet pool. Let your heart rest in My hand as a bird in a nest. Let your eyes be still. Let your hands be free. For then I shall fill all your vision, and then I shall take your hands into Mine and My power shall flow forth into you.

If you would only make yourself a place apart, yes, removed from the pressure and turmoil, and there I will meet you. Yes, I wait for your coming. For I long to pour out My blessings upon You, and I long to give you My fullness. Only be still before Me. Never let the tools and cares of the day rob you of this sweet fellowship with Me.

For I know what you need, and I am concerned about your duties and responsibilities. You will find your cares vanish, and your load is lightened by an unseen hand. I would have you bring Me your love, and even as you are bringing Me your love, I shall in turn bring to you My power, so that I work for you in a twofold measure.

I will give you the power to discharge your duties with greater efficiency. I am actively engaged in working for you in ways you cannot see, to make your path clear, and to bring about things you could never accomplish, and which would otherwise absorb your energies and wear your patience.

So I say again......Rest in Me. Wait upon Me. Come apart with Me. Seek My face. seek My fellowship.

‘Being in the world without being of the world’. These words summarise well the way Jesus speaks of his spiritual life. It is a life in which we are totally transformed by the Spirit of love. Yet it is a life in which everything seems to remain the same. To live a spiritual life does not mean that we must leave our family, give up our jobs, or change our ways of working; it does not mean that we have to withdraw from social and political activities, or lose interest in literature and art; it does not require severe forms of asceticism or long hours of prayer ... What is new is that we are moved from the many things to the Kingdom of God. What is new is that we are set free from the compulsions of our world and have set our hearts on the only necessary thing. What is new is that we no longer experience the many things, people, and events as endless causes for worry, but begin to experience them as the rich variety of ways in which God makes his presence known to us.

Henri Nouwen

Spirituality) is the lived dimension of faith. It is how faith looks in everyday relationships, attitudes, values and behaviours. It is the set of assumptions an individual lives out of, and where he or she chooses to locate meaning. For the Christian, this works on both a communal and personal level. The meaning of life is centred on a God who sent the Son and the Spirit to save his people and be with them. A personal spirituality emerges in the dialogue between this communal faith story and the concrete events of each
individual’s life experience. Tuohy, David SJ

Optimal spiritual health and wellbeing involves developing a sense of purpose in life and reflecting on major events that have occurred and their impact and meaning. It also involves an understanding of right or wrong in a way that allows for consideration of and care for the welfare of others and the environment, and practising compassion and forgiveness.

In recent health research by Dr Deborah Cornah on behalf of the Mental Health Foundation, a loss of that meaning can remove from an individual the power to cope with life’s difficulties:“When I’m in a phase that I’m able to believe that there is a God who gives meaning to that universe, then I have hope. But there have been spells when I haven’t been able to believe that, and that has been absolutely terrifying. That’s been falling into the abyss.” (Ibid, p113)

Another important source of meaning and hope is found in spiritual traditions common to most religions, including liturgy, worship and prayer. It seems that when depression leads people to struggle intellectually with their faith, the elements of ritual, symbol and habit associated with these traditions are able to “carry a person through” their worst moments.

“Even though, intellectually and emotionally you may have all sorts of doubts and turmoils, you are able sort of outwardly to share in the liturgy of the mass, and by that, erm... it’s sort of an acted out statement of faith even when your mind and your emotions may not be able totally to provide faith.” (Ibid, p128)

Mark 7:1-9 New International Version (NIV)That Which Defiles7 The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus 2 and saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. 3 (The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders. 4 When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.[a])5 So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, “Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with defiled hands?”6 He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:“‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.7 They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.’[b]8 You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.”9 And he continued, “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe[c] your own traditions!

Spirituality is not material in nature. It belongs to the relm of ideas, beliefs, values and ethics. Described and is interpreted as the need for meaning, purpose and fulfilment in life. Research states that nearly 90 percent of the world’s population is involved today in some form of spiritual practice (World Christian Database, 2007). Spirituality involves identication with belief or faith system that contributes to the hope and the will to live that they experience. It is individualised concept that measure by the amount of peace and harmony an individual experiences.

Music can parrallel the spiritual and religion.
1) Listening, not just hearing. Many people hear music all day long: in the car, on television, a background radio, etc. but few actually listen, as a musician would. Listening requires a deeper level of awareness than simply hearing. The same holds true in Christianity. “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.” (Rom. 10:17) The word hearing is literally translated as “hearing with understanding”. “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” (Matt. 11:15) Jesus continually challenged those who heard Him to understand what He was saying, beckoning them to a deeper awareness of His words. Listening is an attitude. It’s choosing to be aware, not just “having become dull of hearing”. (Heb. 5:11) The Scripture admonishes Christians to “be swift to hear and slow to speak.” (Js. 1:19) In music, players who play less and listen more are those who are seasoned in their craft. They have come to relish the silent moments as much as, or more than, the rest of the musical activity.

I don’t know one example of a musician, sacred or secular, who has made music for any length of time that hasn’t at some point sensed a power beyond himself, working through his musical performance. Different people have their own unique way of explaining it, but everyone knows the moment it happened. It is forever etched in their memory as an artist. Some people make a futile attempt to try to ‘re-create’ the moment, so that they can ‘package’ it for their next performance. It’s elusive, though. It’s beyond human control. The writers of Scripture knew of this phenomena, “But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.” (I Pet. 1:20-21)

Music and worship have existed in tandem as far back as human history can be observed. If there is any quintessential area in which spirituality and music combine, it is in the area of worship. Time and space in this article prohibit the exposition of the numerous examples of Scriptural texts dealing with music and worship. However, here are some highlights. “Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” (Col. 3:16)
Clearly, music and spirituality are intrinsically woven, inseparable in worshiping the Creative God, the One Who most likely ‘sang’ the worlds into existence from the beginning, and in Whose image we have been made to likewise bring forth that which is creative, glorifying Him in song, music and worship

The Christian philosopher Alvin Plantinga has written:

As the Christian sees things, God does not stand idly by, cooly observing the suffering of His creatures. He enters into and shares our suffering. He endures the anguish of seeing his son, the second person of the Trinity, consigned to the bitterly cruel and shameful death of the cross. Some theologians claim that God cannot suffer. I believe they are wrong. God’s capacity for suffering, I believe, is proportional to his greatness; it exceeds our capacity for suffering in the same measure as his capacity for knowledge exceeds ours. Christ was prepared to endure the agonies of hell itself; and God, the Lord of the universe, was prepared to endure the suffering consequent upon his son’s humiliation and death. He was prepared to accept this suffering in order to overcome sin, and death, and the evils that afflict our world, and to confer on us a life more glorious than we can imagine.{1}

The Bible clearly states that God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. The word meekness means having strength under control. That control is humility. Moses was known to be one of the meekest men in the world, but that does not mean he did not have the strength to accomplish what God called him to do. The meek understand authority and willingly submit to it and live ultimately under God’s authority. Jesus said that if we wanted to be great in His kingdom, then we would be servant leaders. Servant leadership is the definition of meekness.

Elie Wiesel and spirituality

In reading the works of Elie Wiesel, I had to ask God some of the same questions that he did. The storm of emotion followed the paths of anger and despair, and finally ended with the acceptance that Elie Wiesel finds. God is not easy to figure out, and he never will be. With all our knowledge, we cannot guess at his reasons for doing anything. I will never stop wondering what happened, and, more importantly, why, but I will sleep quietly, as long as when I wake I watch to see that there is not another Holocaust, and I pray to God that whatever the reasons for the first one, there never will be a second.

The Holocaust presented a call to people everywhere to reevaluate the role of God in their lives. The pain and suffering that we know took place is in dark contrast to what we would have thought possible in the presence of our God, and anyone who comes in contact with these horrors will be forever shaken in his present faith. Some have reacted with anger toward God, others with denial. Still others reacted with mistrust of all that God had meant before. But by asking questions, some have grown to learn that God never did things the way people expect Him to, and that fact becomes the cornerstone of the new start to their theology. God does not answer questions unless they suit His purposes. This is what we have learned from Auschwitz and from the writings of Elie Wiesel. We must continue to ask questions, continue to challenge God, until, one day, He Himself will give us the answers. And until then we should never feel so secure in faith as to think that Auschwitz could never happen again. We must make certain, through our actions, that it will never happen again
