AI is used in various industry and entertainment is not an exception. The entertainment industry has always been affected by user's creativity and technology which worked together to capture audience's attention. Today, artificial intelligence plays a big role in how entertainment is created, distributed, and experienced. From AI-driven recommendation system on Netflix and Youtube to scriptwriting for stories and generative music software like AIVA, AI helps artists and companies create more unique, efficient and innovative pieces.

I chose the entertainment industry because that is where I have the most experience in. I have always been using technology for the sake of entertainment and AI adds a new level of layer to that system by analyzing audience preferences and even helping to create original content even to those who might not have the skill.

On my Padlet wall, I will talk about 3 key applications of AI in entertainment. This would include things like deepfake visual effects, music composition or content recommendation made by AI. Each example will show how AI is shaping the entertainment industry and amplifying the role of human imagination.

Personally, AI in entertainment has a bright future. How humans and AI machines can work together create stunning art, videos and games more immersive and accessible for everyone excites me the most and I can't wait to see how this technology advances in the future.

Entertainment - Deepfake visual effects.

Deepfake technology uses artificial intelligence and computer vision to generate extremely realistic looking synthetic videos by replacing someone's face or voice with another. It relies on deep learning models like Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), where two neural networks compete to create more and more convincing results. This technology has improved visual effects of it, film production, and digital storytelling which enabled realistic looking recreations and de-aging of actors. However, deepfakes are also a candidate for major ethical and security problems. Problems like misinformation, identity theft and consent issues are significant even with advancement in detection tools and distinguishing real from AI-generated media still remains a technical challenge.

I find this technology interesting because to me, this technology just seem to have much greater negative side than the positive side. Yes, it is true that it can be used for safe and entertainment purpose like the video I watched of a guy pranking his friend with deepfake video and sending it to his other friends but those were done after informing everyone else that the video being sent to them were fake and they just simply had to react like they didn't know to prank their friend. Without these cautious procedures deepfake is just a massive tool that makes identity theft and fake news so much easier to access and abuse and I don't really see any innovative purpose of this technology that makes up for its risk that comes with it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VY5suVb0BSI

Ai-driven music composition allows programs to generate original melodies, harmonies and full musical pieces from data. These models often use deep learning architectures like RNNs, LSTMs, Transformers and GANs trained on large datasets. These programs help speed up the creative process and also let non musicians work on their ideas and support your own personalization. There are still challenges that are present, AIs may lack long term musical coherence, it may struggle to convey emotions or it may just produce repetitive patterns. There are also issues on copyright, authorship, and training data bias.

I find this technology interesting because music program is hard to learn especially on your own and this technology would make music much more accessible to people without having to learn a whole new skill set. However similar to art and drawing, I don't know how people who are studying this skill or have been working on this field would feel about this technology. It is true that the quality and authenticity of a human created music sounds better and more thoughtful to our ears but just from the fact that anyone with zero experience in music can just generate a music might discourage some people.

https://youtu.be/vA63-nDMYGg?si=p6VIwUoI9wkKu_2A

Entertainment - Content recommendation

Content recommendation technology analyze users' past behavior (which includes what they watch, search, liked, etc..) to recommend new content like videos that's tailored to your taste. They use a mix of machine learning techniques including collaborative filtering, content based filtering, matrix factorization, and more recently deep learning models with diverse input features. The benefits includes better user engagement, easier discovery of relevant content, more consistent viewing times and more satisfaction. The challenges are when you start a new account. New users start with little to no data given to the algorithm so it takes for it to start knowing your taste and slowly get better at knowing you. There's also bias in data which means popular contents tend to get recommended more, a bit of privacy concerns since it is collecting your information and using the data.

I find this interesting because I spend a big chunk of my time on Netflix and Youtube and it kind of surprises me how good it is at providing me with what I would be interested in. Even contents that I have never seen before gets recommended but it does catch my eyes. Now obviously there are more times those new types of videos don't catch my interest but how frequently it does kind of blows my mind sometimes. There are concerns though since it sometimes recommends me information on what I talked about in real life with someone else. I did no search on it nor watch videos on it but it just somehow knows that I mentioned about it and tries to slide it in to my recommendation. This concerns how much of my daily action is actually getting collected for data.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrzWB19GQYQ

Future Trends and Ethical Considerations.

The future for artificial intelligence in the entertainment industry looks great. It has creativity, personalization, and efficiency that wouldn't be possible without AI. As AI continue to evolve, they will become better and easier to to use by humans to create natural scripts or compose music or even produce an entire content like film or games. Generative AI tools such as ChatGPT will become better at writing natural sounding dialogue and/or adaptive storylines that changes its content based on the audience's reaction. AI driven recommendations will also become better at content recommendations, helping platforms predict trends and show different experiences to individual users with high accuracy.

New technologies like real time motion capture, virtual machines, and AI assisted editing will make filmmaking and development of games easier, cheaper and faster in the future. In the future things like interactive films where it changes based on your emotion or games that adapt to players choices might soon become main stream.

AI generated content has a major problem with authorship. Like who is the author when AI works on a movie or a music. Is it the composer of the data it used? is it the user of AI or is it the AI itself? What I find particularly dangerous is deepfake. Deepfake technology is a very powerful tool that can be used for visual effect. However the risk of it being used for identity theft and misinformation cannot be ignored. Also, companies using your personal data for content recommendation is a major concern for privacy. To ensure these don't become a problem, the companies should follow transparency and make sure consent is present for data collection and have accountability for their works. When used responsibly, AI can be a very strong tool that makes human work better and faster, opening a possibilities we haven't seen before.

Societal Impact.

AI is not just about technology making content creation more accessible but it also has societal impact. AIs in film making, animation and music composition has made production of them much faster and more cost effective. This raises concern on employment. Many people from writers, voice actors and artists worry that AI tools could reduce their job opportunities or make human artists lose value. There are new roles that are being introduced such as AI model training which could be an option instead of hard replacement of those jobs in future workspace but it is a painful choice non the less.

Privacy is another big issue. Recommendation system on platforms like Netflix or YouTube rely on collecting your personal data to match your preferences. While this improves recommendation, it also risks data like your personal habits and interests being collected by these companies. Ensuring transparency as in where my data is being used, and making sure your data is protected will be important as these algorithms collect more and more of your data.

Personally, these issues makes me think of the technology as a double edged sword. In one hand I like its ability to enhance content and accessibility of the content but without proper ethical standard to protect the creators and the consumers it can very much hurt more than good.

Researching AI in the entertainment industry has taught me how AI and technology is shaping creativity today. I learned how AI tools like deepfakes, music generators and recommendation system are affecting how we make and experience art. One challenge I faced was understanding the technical part of AI but I could overcome it by simplifying these complex concepts using examples and real world examples. This project made me realize that while AI can make entertainment more accessible and exciting, it also raises concerns about ethics, privacy and job. Overall, my perspective stayed the same however. AI is a tool that is super helpful and could be fun but it should be followed by responsibility.
