Community Service Learning

To me community service learning is learning through helping a community. After William Powell served in World War I he became interested in aviation but realized that there weren't any flying schools for blacks in his area. this caused him to move to Los Angeles where he learned to fly. After this he created a club which raised awareness about the lack of inclusion in the black community. This pen symbolizes community service learning because Powell used it while he created a school that taught black men to fly, a service that they didn't have.

To me leadership means taking charge of a situation and being able to show or tell others how to behave. Dr. King is a perfect example of what it means to be a leader: he organized different rallies and protests and taught people how they should act in certain situations during the Civil Rights Movement. The church in this portrait, and other black churches in Birmingham, was used to train nonviolent protesters during the Civil Rights Movement. I think this portrait is a good representation of leadership not only because the subject is Dr. King, a prominent leader at that time, but because it shows him talking to and leading black men and women.

To me community building in a diverse society is is helping people that are different come together. This display case portrays a diverse society because not only did the natives and pilgrims look different, they spoke different languages and came from different cultures. The community building aspect is displayed through the learning experience the settlers are having. Not only are the three men connecting through that experience, the native is actually showing the pilgrims a piece of his culture, combining the two different cultures and peoples.

To me Scholarship is learning and studying to become educated. Caroline Dall was an author that contributed to the Women's Rights Movement. She was very well educated and founded "Una" a journal that talked about women's rights. Dall herself portrays scholarship because of her education and experience writing, but this particular picture of her displays scholarship because she is reading a book-- a key symbol of education.

To me citizenship is fulfilling your duty as a citizen of a community. This portrait of the Battle of Bunker Hill shows the citizens of America doing their duty to keep it safe and earn their independence. This displays citizenship because the men are fighting for not only themselves and their own freedom, but the freedom of their wives and children, and the generations that will come after them.
