Nelle Harper Lee was born and raised in Monroeville, Alabama. Her family consisted of Amasa Coleman, her mother and homemaker, Frances Cunningham, her father and practicing lawyer and four siblings; of which she was the youngest. At 31 years of age, Nelle had written her first book, Go Set a Watchman. Though it was an unsuccessful attempt of publishing, but through the encouragement of Mrs. Hohoff, a publisher, she rewrote her book, later called, To Kill a Mocking Bird. She resubmitted her revised copy on July 11, 1960, it was successfully published and captivated its readers. This led to many awards be presented to Nelle in honor of her outstanding work. The book was also based on her life/childhood.

Christian

The state of Alabama seceded from the United States of America on January 11, 1861. Alabama was a slave state and joined the Confederacy. It provided a great supply of troops, military material, food, and horses. Very little of the states cotton was sold due to the American Navy closing the main port Mobile. After the war was over and the Confederate states were defeated, nearly 440,000 slaves were freed from Alabama. There was still tension between the blacks and whites in Alabama which is why in TKAM, there is a use of racial slurs and racism.

Delina Shitaye

The Scottsboro Boys Trial

The trial took place after a dispute on a speeding train, of which several white and black teens began a dispute between each other, in which stones where thrown at each other; the occurrence was the result of a white member stepping on the hand of a black member. The black youth forced all but one of the white youth off of the train in Stevenson. The white youth that where forced off the train approached the stationmaster in Stevenson. They claimed that the black youth had assaulted the members of their group. The two female members of the white youths claimed that they where also raped by a group of 12 black men. So the stationmaster wired ahead to halt the train at the next stop. When the train stopped, several armed men stormed it; rounding up all the black members. They tied them up and placed them on a truck; driving them to the county jail in Stevenson. Their trial took place 12 days later; with their lawyers being of low experience. The only witnesses to the gang rape where the two female members. While their testimonies where misshapen, controversial and contradicting, they swayed the already jury biased jury. This lead to the incrimination and sentencing of death for eight of the member. Though the ninth member, a 12 year old boy was dismissed.

Jordan

These laws were named after a popular 19th century song that stereotyped African Americans, Jim Crow was also referred to as a "negro". These laws were enforced around the 1890's and were overruled in 1965. The laws mandated segregation of schools, washrooms, public transportation, and even water fountains.

Delina Shitaye

Great Depression

The great depression was the outcome of many devastating economical and environmental effects in the united states. One of the main contributing factors was the overproduction of man made fabrics driving prices down. Thus small farmers of cotton plantations found it hard to live of such low income of their cotton yield; causing some to foreclose and for some to join a co-ownership also known as share crops. These sharecrops owned more than two thirds of the farm-able land in the south. The way these sharecrop farms operated can be traced back to the "fostering" of an already sever drought. Farmers then abandoned their, now expensive and impossible, practice and moved for the big city in hopes of finding another source of income. The third contributing factor, the stock market crash, can be traced back to a day known as "Black Tuesday" (Tuesday, October 29, 1929). Before this day occurred the stock market was healthy and many citizens made an income out of their smart and dangerous investments. Returns seemed high leading to a feeling of confidence, but on "Black Tuesday," thanks to the poor sharecrop farms, the stock market crashed. This led to many lost investments and wealth, with the eventual outcome of less paying costumers; therefore business nationwide went under and they took the banks with them. When the banks went under, many people could not receive or seek a loan, they so desperately needed.
