When I first saw the text, I felt like it was directed straight at me. In my family I am the most vertically challenged one, so the text spoke to me. It used to bother me as I once went through what the writer experienced. However, I am no longer like that. Just like the author, my friends made me embrace my “fun size” self. I too learned the importance of self-love from this experience. And it turns out, I am actually of average for a Malaysian female, so it’s nothing to worry about, at all.

I don’t feel excited as I don’t really like poem because I’m bad at reading between the lines. I take things literally most of the time.

It doesn’t really remind me of myself because I don’t think I am that short lol but, this line “I’m beautiful in my own may” speaks to me as I too have flaws and imperfections.

I like how the author structured the sentences to make every lines rhyme with the other. I love when it rhymes!

It’s not a difficult poem to understand after all hehe.

When did we start defining beauty?

When I first read the title, and probably due to the somewhat cheerful background colour, I thought it might be a funny write-up. It might also be someone being sad for being short.

After reading it, I know that the writer feels negative emotion for being short. It feels like people were judging her. And we can see that she was bullied in school for it.

The poem starts off with heavy emotion. But in the middle, it had a turning point. We know that writer’s world was not all that bad. She had friends’ support. And she later also acknowledge her being short was part of god’s plan.

What I feel, reading as a student, I would feel empathy for people who are short. And I would probably be more sensitive to it now.

But reading as an adult, I feel like it’s not fair that people had to feel bad for being short. When did society start defining beauty? Why did society have to define beauty? And look at the effect it brought to the younger generations. It could even affect someone all the way to their adulthood. And people start making cosmetic surgery a norm because of society’s definition of beauty.

Society needs to change.

We need to change.

As a teacher, we need to be aware of this, to not make students feel there’s anything wrong with someone being short.

This poem hits me since I am quite short in height. However, I did not take that as negative since it is a good thing for me. Why? That is because people will always think that I am younger than my age. Well, guess what? I am going to turn 30 next year! But till now some people still think that I am still studying in university and they will shocked once I said that I am married and I have a son. So, let’s not only see things on the negative side, let’s always be positive.
