In 1964, Joseph took a position at MIT. In 1966, he published a comparatively simple program called ELIZA, which performed natural language processing. Driven by a script named DOCTOR, Eliza was capable of engaging humans in a conversation which bore a striking resemblance to one with an empathic psychologist.

The main issue with health care is that we don’t always have doctor or therapist available at the moment that one is feeling weak. In recent years we have seen a rise in interactive technology. We have started to find new ways of using technology to treat various mental problems. This includes online, computer based, and virtual reality to behavioral therapy. The robotics field has grown rapidly and invented social robots to help provide treatment and emotional support 24/7. Robots have an artificially intelligent system that has a physical embodiment, they are autonomous, and they can communicate with humans.

The new term, “robotherapy” is used to describe the different ways that social robots can be used to help people with needs. Helping children, adults, or elderly with social, physical or cognitive problems. Robots will be available 24/7. The robots will help with the shortage of Personal Support Workers that we are currently experiencing. “Research has already shown that robots can help improve quality of life for many people who might otherwise fall between cracks due to not having the help they need”.

ELIZA is one of the first and well-known programs to attempt to act as a therapist. Creator Joseph Weizenbaum designed ELIZA to help provide Rogerian psychotherapy. ELIZA was created during the years of 1964-1966 in the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.

This innovation will be applicable in Hamilton, Ontario. It will be available around the world in different moderations. Our city and country could really benefit from this innovation because with the rise of mental health we have a decrease in doctors and therapists available and limited hours. With robotherapy the idea is that you can log into your computer and speak with a therapist at 2am if you are having a break down and need someone to talk to.

Robots are still many years away from surpassing the empathetic abilities that therapists can give out. There is also a possibility that they will never be able to be as good as a human therapist. They will be a useful tool but only a human therapist can create the therapeutic relationship that a client needs to make considerable progress.
