Notable Ideas

The point that really resonated with me from this week’s readings was that the purpose of a lesson is important to participant’s motivation to pay attention during a lesson. This idea is not something I had previously considered. I used to think a way to motivate people to pay attention was getting the right to the meat of the lesson and planning interesting and engaging activities. While these strategies may work, framing the lesson by stating the objective or purpose at the beginning is another great way to motivate listeners.

Application in Classroom

Previously I thought that stating an objective at the beginning of a lesson was boring and my second-grade students did not really care. Although Knowles’ theory was created for adult learning, I believe it still applies to children! This theory states that since learning takes effort and concentration, adults need to know the reason they are being asked to learn. Stating an objective at the beginning of a lesson gives students a head’s up as to what information is coming. Framing the lesson helps them decide where to place this new information in their mental “filing cabinet”. I can apply this information to my classroom by beginning each lesson with an objective. Typically in my math lessons, there is a flipchart page with lesson objectives at the start of each lesson. I will make sure to spend more time focusing on this important bit of info.

Application in PD

I will incorporate the different principles of Knowles' theory of adult learning (Andragogy) into my DTTP by ensuring that my PD participants are motivated. Andragogy emphasizes learner motivation by connecting it to practical application. In the PD I deliver, one of my goals is for every teacher who participates to walk away with tools and resources that they will actually use. To ensure that the PD is useful, I will break up the PD into levels so teachers are being met at their current comfort level with technology. Another way I will ensure that their PD sessions are practical is to provide resources for all elementary level teachers K-5 in each training course. Teachers will be more motivated to participate in the PD if there are tools that are relevant to their content and accessible to them given their understanding of technology.

Great point, Gabby! And when we're learning, it's great for us to have an objective for our own learning.
