Therefore, “a more complete definition of A.I. includes technical approaches, social practices, and industrial power.” (AINOW, 2018).

A.I. in the public sector

Despite all these questions, many States around the world are increasingly using algorithmic decision-making tools to determine the distribution of goods and services, including education, public health services, policing, and housing, among others. Beyond principles, more empirically, particularly within the US, where some of these projects have been developed further than pilot phases, confronted with the evidence on bias and harm caused by automated decisions, Artificial Intelligence programs have faced criticism on several fronts. But more recently, governments in Latin America are also following the hype to deploy A.I. systems in public services, sometimes with the support of US companies that are using the region as a laboratory of ideas which, perhaps fearing criticism in their home countries, are not even tested in the US first.

A. Surveillance of the poor: turning poverty and vulnerability into machine-readable data

The former United Nations Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights, Philip Alston, has criticized the phenomenon in which “systems of social protection and assistance are increasingly driven by digital data and technologies that are used to automate, predict, identify, surveil, detect, target and punish.”

B. Embedded racism

For the UN Special Rapporteur, E. Tandayi (2020), emerging digital technologies should also be understood as capable of creating and maintaining racial and ethnic exclusion in systemic or structural terms.

Ruha Benjamin (2019) discusses how the use of new technologies reflects and reproduces the existing racial injustices in US society, even though they are promoted and perceived as more objective or progressive than the discriminatory systems of an earlier era.

From technology development itself, in her research, Noble (2018) demonstrates how commercial search engines such as Google not only mediate but are mediated by a series of commercial imperatives that, in turn, are supported by both economic and information policies that end up endorsing the commodification of women’s identities.

C. Patriarchal by Design: sexism, compulsory heteronormativity, and gender binarism

Many AI systems work by sorting people into a binary view of gender, as well as by reinforcing outdated stereotypes of gender and sexual orientation. A recent study co-authored by DeepMind senior staff scientist Shakir Mohamed exposes how the discussion about algorithmic fairness has omitted sexual orientation and gender identity, with concrete impacts on “censorship, language, online safety, health, and employment” leading to discrimination and exclusion of LGBT+ people.

D. Colonial extractivism of data bodies and territories

Authors like Couldry and Mejias (2018) y Shoshana Zuboff (2019) review this current state of capitalism where the production and extraction of personal data naturalize the colonial appropriation of life in general. To achieve this, a series of ideological processes operate where, on the one hand, personal data is treated as raw material, naturally disposable for the expropriation of capital and, on the other, where corporations are considered the only ones capable of processing and, therefore, appropriate the data.

Full study in: https://notmy.ai/news/oppressive-a-i-feminist-categories-to-understand-its-political-effects/

Storytelling as Self-Liberation (General Summary and Notes)

This was my first and most favorite session of the entire conference (and the competition is deep, y'all!). We were prompted at the beginning to tell a story of a moment in our lives in education when we had a realization or felt liberated or radicalized. We then went into partners and told our stories to one another, then we created logins on anchor.fm, a free site for posting and hosting podcasts, and recorded our stories. We were able to do some basic editing (add music, cut parts out, etc.) as the site is very intuitive and user-friendly, and the co-facilitators were very helpful to each individual participant.

It was incredibly moving on so many levels; recalling a powerful moment in life, sharing your personal story with someone previously unknown to you personally, and then preserving that story in a more polished way are just some of the ways in which I felt truly transformed.

I've listed ideas below this for how this can be used at Living School; as well as a link to the podcast I recorded within that 90 minute session.

This was also a top session! During this time, two co-facilitators explained how they came to work around reparations at their full time jobs, and then how one of them co-founded a consultancy based on ensuring that organizations and companies offer values-aligned compensation and salary rather than action/task/productivity aligned, as the latter can be very white supremacist, subjective, and/or unfairly disadvantage those who have disabilities or neurodiversities that prevent them from being as archetypically "productive" as others.

This session is the one that most transformed my thinking in such a short time, and is something that built a huge fire in me to share with the most other people.

One of the co-directors developed a whole new framework (I have screenshots and a recording of the session that I can include & share) for considering how people get paid equitably at a business in a way that doesn't penalize them in traditional and common ways (e.g. for being disabled, having other health conditions, being neurodivergent, etc.). Given that I've *only* worked at places that have either a severe or mostly white-supremacist leaning framework for compensation, including LSNO, I feel like this is the session that challenged me most to think about what's possible and how to be an equitable place for people, whomever they are.

This was the session most aligned with its summary. The summary was "Learning, like art-making, is natural, and happening all the time – but conventional school claims otherwise, designed to uphold the hierarchy that put it place. It's not by accident they taught you that you're not an artist. In this session all participants, regardless of artistic experience, will make marks, tell stories, and generate original zines as jumping-in places to play with questions of learning vs schooling, creativity, futurity, and education."

The session was led by an individual with long time history in both education and the arts, both overlapping and separately. Our facilitator began with a story of self (what inspires and fuels them, as well as what led them to the work they're currently doing) and then used said story as a conversation starter. We split into smaller groups to discuss our own stories of self (in an abbreviated version) with others, then identifying moments in our own educational experiences where we EITHER felt othered OR as most aligned with how we thought/learned/best processed information. We used those experience examples to discuss what traditional education currently tends to expect of us (us = students, parents/families, educators) versus what experiences pulled out the best in us.

We compared and contrasted those experiences and then made commitments on how wanted to provide those opportunities for our current communities.

I felt very aligned to this session because the vast majority of the faciltator's examples as well as the life experience of other participants were similar to what I experienced in my K-8 grade years in a Montessori environment. So much of the way in which Montessori programs are set up helped me, especially with my neurodiversities, to understand how to engage as a lifelong learner, to ask questions and seek answers, to experiment, to craft, to show and prove my work, and I was left with a lot of reflections on how I want to coach others (esp. my teachers) to get to this level of granular understanding with everything they ask students to do.
