HIV originated in Africa, and people believe it started in Kinshasa. Until the 1980's, no one knows how many people developed HIV/AIDS. The worst cases of people in Africa with HIV were in the years of 1999 and 2000. In the 1960's they think 2,000 people in Africa were infected with HIV. In the 1970's the first outbreak occurred in Kinshasa. The HIV virus spread quickly by hetero sexual, so the worlds first HIV outbreak occurred. In the 1980's HIV spread quickly due to a combination of wide spread labor migration, high rate of men in urban areas, but very few women, and a lot of sexually transmitted diseases. The reason so many people were infected in the 1980's was because people didn't know what HIV was or anything about it. The 1980's was the hardest hit decade. In the 1990's they were trying to find new ideas for prevention and treatment. In 1999 the Kenyan president declared AIDS as a national disaster. In East Africa new cases of AIDS started to decline, in Uganda the number of cases dropped from 30% to 12%. Millions of Africans had AID's, nearly 24 million people were infected, 6,000 each day and it increased to 11,000 people getting infected each day. Then, in the 2000's many countries in Africa were able to get medicine for treatment.

Identifying the problem

HIV/AIDS in Africa is one of the most important and worst health issues of all time. You can be infected by aids through body fluids, sexual intercourse with someone who is infected, and needles. Aids is one of the top diseases that kills most of Africa's population. HIV destroys the human blood cells in bodies, which is a problem because they are a key to the human immune system. Africa seems to be the worst place where the HIV/AIDS virus is spread. Some researchers think that bad nutrition and different sexual customs could be the cause. 71 percent of people that are infected with HIV live in Africa. Since a third of the adults in Africa have several sexual partners and are HIV positive, this could be part of the problem with the spread of the disease. Most Africans don't know how to read or write and lack the education that they need to know if they have the disease, so they never know if they have the disease or not. HIV gets spread around so easily because most people keep it to themselves when they are infected. Now HIV is threatening more young and middle aged people. HIV is a huge problem with pregnant women in Africa. 33 percent of women that are pregnant in Africa are infected with this disease, which means when their child is born, they will be infected too. HIV/AIDS is a huge issue all around the world, but especially in Africa.

There are many causes if HIV/AIDS in Africa. Rural areas seem to be poverty stricken and these areas are a key factor in HIV/AIDS transmission. Poor people are more likely to die or become sick from HIV in poor nutrition in these areas because of poor health and lack of medicine. Migration is also a cause of the spread of HIV. People who live in rural areas like unmarried adults, tend to more African cities that are more sexually permissive. Because of the migration, the infection levels are much higher in the cities. Something that causes HIV to spread more rapidly is people who sell their privacy for money or goods and do not use protection causes HIV to spread more rapidly. HIV can also be spread in healthcare settings. HIV can be spread through blood and from an infected mother to her child during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding A big cause of HIV is the number of children orphaned because of their mother dying because of the disease, before they are in their teens. People that are HIV positive and know it normally don't tell anyone about it. The reason they don't tell anyone is because their education, religious practices, or family could be in jeopardy. Some people are not accepting of HIV positive people, so they may become excluded.

HIV has many affects on African people. For example, it can affect work force. People could be too sick to come to work, increase spending funds on health and death, low productivity, and absent from work. The HIV disease is responsible for infecting over half of the children's parents in Africa.Young kids grow up without the love and care of their parents. When children's parents pass way because of this disease, they are left with their grandparents to care for them and that normally causes emotional financial impacts on family life. If one person in a family has HIV, it can affect the whole families life. If a child is living with someone that is infected, they will most likely not be able to go to school or miss a lot of school because they are taking care of their sick parents. Another reason a child may not be able to attend school is if they have a parent that has died from HIV/AIDS, they get put in temporary households and go from family to family and it is hard for them to maintain school attendance. There are many impacts that HIV/AIDS have on peoples life, but it is mostly the children that it affects the most.

There has been many attempted solutions to try and cure the disease of HIV/AIDS. There is a solution trying to be done currently. One attempt that has been done is governments in the region are giving drugs to out to the people who don't have the disease yet, but might be at risk to getting it in the future. The strategy that was used to find areas called "hot zones", which are the parts of Africa has a much higher percentage of HIV than another country. Targeting hot zones using the conventional strategy would prevent 40 percent HIV viruses, but would cost 40 percent more. There is an organization called AMREF, which means "African Medical and Research Foundation. This organization is important because there is a woman leading the group. Try to have hospitals to keep people informed on HIV and see if they have the virus. Those re some of the attempted solution to prevent HIV/AIDS

My Solution

HIV and AIDS in Africa is extremely bad and has been for several decades. In order for the people in Africa to not contract or spread the HIV virus, there needs to be several things that happen. First is education, the people of Africa are lacking the knowledge they need to not contract the HIV virus and to stop the spread of the disease. If they start to educate the children, of Africa about the dangers of contracting HIV and list the reasons why they need to stay healthy to grow as adults. Proper nutrition for children and adults is critical to their immune system. In order to have a healthy immune system, you need to eat a well-balanced diet so your body can fight diseases and you can live a long life. Another solution to stop the spread of HIV in Africa is stopping people from migrating and spreading the disease. People in rural areas are migrating to cities where there are more cases of people who are HIV positive and if they do not protect themselves, they will become infected and spread the disease. If people do migrate to cities, then they need to be educated on how to not contract the disease. There needs to be public assistance for these people. They need to be educated that they can't be active with just any random person. Free medical clinics should be set up to assist people in need, they should distribute birth control to everyone who is HIV positive so it cannot be spread. The free clinics will be able to educate younger women who aren't yet affected by HIV/AIDS and show them the causes, like if a women i pregnant and she is HIV positive, the baby will be too. The free clinics can be set up in the hardest hit African countries. They will good medical staff that will keep the clinic clean and disease free. The drugs needed at the medical treatment centers will need to be donated so the underprivileged can receive medical attention they need. Africa will need the support from their government by giving countries money needed to treat patients. Governments need to get grants and donations from other countries or organizations to assist with the growing HIV issue. When the government realizes how bad this disease really is, they will understand that they need to keep the young children healthy so they can get jobs, and maybe this will help the economy grow. If people don't get the treatment they need the population will decrease and there will be no one for the workforce and industries. There are many way to help raise money to stop the spread of HIV. There have been concerts in the past to help raise money, and I think it would make a huge impact to continue that. This is my solution to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS in Africa.
