The Bereavement Journey is a 7 Session programme that assists bereaved people to process their loss.  Each session comprises two films followed by discussion in a small group.  The final session is optional.

Please note that the course is open to staff and students, and groups may be mixed.

The group is led by two Black facilitators from the University Counselling Service, who are of African-Caribbean heritage experienced in working with individuals from diverse cultural social background and bring shared cultural experience and understanding to support students. 

Each session offers a chance to connect with like-minded peers, share and explore personal experiences, and develop meaningful coping strategies. The group aims to build a supportive community that extends beyond the sessions.

If you work with any students who may benefit from joining the group, kindly share this information with them.  

Who can attend the group?

The group is open to students who identify as Black or mixed race with African and/or Caribbean heritage and aims to provide support around mental health and wellbeing. 

What does the group discuss?

Weekly themes may include:

• student life and culture

• anxiety

• depression

• accessing support services

• managing racial trauma

• academic and cultural expectation

• diaspora experiences

• discrimination

• healthy relationships

• and any other topics that impact Black students. Nothing is off limits. Students choose what they want to share.

  
  

When and where does the group run?

The Black Student Group will run weekly for seven weeks from October 22nd to December 3rd, 2025, every Wednesday from 2:30 to 4:00 pm.

• Duration - 90 minutes

• Frequency - weekly for 7 weeks

• Dates - October 22^nd - December 3^rd 

• Location – The Orchards, University Park Campus

How do I register?

Each session will take place on a Thursday evening; free food and refreshments are available. Alpha UK have provided some amazing short films that help to answer questions and learn about The Christian Faith. Opportunities are given for discussion and everyone's views and contribution are respected, but it's okay just to listen, no one will be forced to speak or participate. Our different views, values or beliefs will be respected and will help to enrich the sessions. We will include some helpful activities to make sure everyone feels connected.

In a welcoming environment we hope that those who attend will make new friends and feel right at home and be able to be themselves.

This event is provided for all students of the University of Nottingham no matter what background we all come from.

Whilst it is best to start ALPHA with the intention of attending most sessions, it is flexible so if you can't make a session or two that's fine and if you want to book into certain sessions only that is available.

• 23rd October- Why did Jesus die?

• 30th October- How can I have faith?

• 6th November- Why and how should I pray?

• 13th November- Why and how should I read the Bible?

It is important to note that Alpha is a discovery event about Christianity for all UoN Students. It is open to students of faith and none it is also a great opportunity for people of faith to refresh, develop and be supported. Please book in to the sessions you would like to attend so we have enough food for everyone, we do try to have a Vegan option and to take in to consideration food allergies. Thank You!

Using a range of digital and non-digital examples, this session explores different types of note-making to help you find note-making strategies that suit your learning preferences. We also introduce you to shortcuts for note making, and software that can help you make great notes which you can return to again and again.

Every course in the University has a Course Rep or groups of Reps who convey your feedback to the relevant staff and better your academic experience. They attend termly meetings called Student-Staff Forums (SSFs) (link) where they can discuss concerns and issues, or positive feedback on the way the course runs, or specific modules and lecturers. These meetings allow the student reps and staff to work collaboratively to enact positive change based on feedback from the students studying that course, to make it better for you and future students.

SENIOR COURSE REPS

Senior Course Reps are also students, and these are the people who Course Reps report to in the first instance. Senior Course Reps are appointed either through being elected by the students on the course, or interviewed by course staff.

They have a bigger job, and are responsible for coordinating the reps on their course, collating feedback from all reps, forming the agendas for SSFs, and often chairing these meetings. In some Schools Senior Course Reps are even paid for their job - this can be a brilliant opportunity to consider alongside your studies as a flexible and rewarding job!

The Black Leaders Programme has been created by a charity called Grit which specialises in personal development programmes that aim to create breakthroughs in how participants see themselves and the world.

This programme has been created exclusively for UK undergraduate students of Black heritage at the University of Nottingham to help them understand how their strengths and passions can be used to achieve, thrive and lead.

Through an intensive two-day face-to-face workshop on Tuesday 21 October and Wednesday 22 October, students will explore their identity, increase their confidence and gain leadership and advocacy skills. 

You must have attended the meet and greet information session to take part in the workshop.

There is also the opportunity to network with other students of Black heritage and discuss your university experiences in a safe space facilitated by Black trainers.

We are looking for participants who are healthy but think they may be overweight (BMI of 25 – 35 www.nhs.uk/bmi).

Participation involves two study mornings comprised of two non-invasive MRI scans, one before and one after a short period of mild cooling using a commercially available cooling jacket. Participants will receive a shopping voucher as a thank you for taking part.

This research will help us understand how brown fat may support metabolic health.

What is a journal article and why do they seem to matter so much at University? We will explore why journal articles are important for your academic development, how to read them effectively, and how to tackle tricky sections of journal articles.

To apply for this NAA module, you must already be a Peer Guide or Peer Mentor in your school.

This is a fantastic opportunity to expand your mentoring skills, including planning and facilitating study skills support and undertaking training in inclusive and reflective teaching practice. You will have the chance to specialise in Academic, Digital, or Information Skills, as well as develop professional competencies, including leadership and presentations.

This module focuses more on study skills than pastoral support, introducing you to study strategies and teaching you how to pass these on to fellow students. 

Core unit and sub-unit content will be delivered in November and December. Portfolios are submitted in April.
