Visible Thinking Routines

Visible thinking routines are routines that help promote content learning with student thinking. Its purpose is to encourage students to develop their thinking skills and to also help deepen content learning. After searching through the many visible thinking strategies, I realized that not a lot of these strategies were connected to mathematics, which I already assumed. Although a lot of these skills were not targeted to mathematics, some of them, if tweaked a little, could be formatted to fit in a math class.

One of the visible thinking strategies that I already use in my math class is the Think, Pair, Share strategy. In this strategy, students are given a topic, question, theory etc. and are given the time to think and gather thoughts on the strategy, discuss their thoughts with a partner, and then share out to the class.

In my math class, I use this strategy by giving my students a math problem or equation to solve. Their "think" time, is the time they take to solve it and provide a justification and explanation for their answer. Their "pair" time is to discuss their answers with a partner. At this point they are expected to bounce ideas back and forth to one another, compare answers and settle any discrepancies in the work. Finally, in the share time, students can share their answers, whether they get up and go to the board to show and explain their work, talk about it out loud or discuss their process. I think that visible thinking strategies are important in a math classroom, I just hope to find other ways that math teachers have successfully used these strategies in the class.

A Critical Literacy Response to YA literature

I read the article that talked about street literature being apart of YAL and some of the reason for and against it. Some educators feel that introducing street literature as apart of YAL can have a negative effect on its readers. Overall, they feel that street literature introduces drugs, sex, violence, crime and abuse to youth readers which in their opinions "inappropriate".
On the other hand, educators that are for street literature being included in YAL is an important tool for growth in the youth. They feel that it can serve as an entry point into a critical literacy framework for all students, especially students of color who are living in that reality already. Students, more specifically students of color can connect and relate to street literature because for most, it is what they see and deal with everyday. For some students, it helps them see the downfalls of bad decisions, helping them make better decision, it makes them more comfortable to talk about things that they are normally silent about such as sex. Street literature also gives them insight to lifestyles and life obstacles that they may face and how they should overcome and deal with them.
In my opinion, I believe that street literature should be included in YAL. Not only does it relate to the lives that many of our kids live and experience, but it also provides spaces for teachers to have controversial yet stimulating conversations with their class. I believe that allowing street literature to be apart of YAL, can prepare students to have critical conversations about the life and world and controversial issues happening and effecting them.
