The Danger of a Single Story Reflection

-How does power affect a story? Critical Thinking: Analyze the quote: "History is written by the winners."
Power can affect a story in many ways. The quote "History is written by the winners." means that when reading or being told about history there is often a bias. Often people are only told one point of view of history. You only see the side of the people who "won" making out the other side of the story to be irrelevant since they are "losers".

-Why are stories so important? Why is it so important to reject the "single story"?
Stories are important so we know how everything exactly went down. Some stories often get mixed up and not told exactly how they originated, for this reason it is important to be open to and to hear multiple sides of a story. In the Ted Talk video the lady said that she believed mexico was poor and suffering but, when she actually visited the place she realized that it was nothing like the media portrayed them. This is why it is important to not only engrave a "single story" in your head but to engrave multiple versions of the story into your head. The story only becomes the version it is told as.

1. What is the main idea of Book lll?
Book lll of The Iliad revolves around the intense war between the Greeks and the Trojans. The author really brings the book to life with descriptive details and showing how far men would go for a beautiful woman.

2. What was the cause of the war?
The main cause of the war between the Greeks and the Trojans is caused over Helen. Paris stole Helen from Menelaus causing them to get into a duel and start a whole war.

3. Could this story have really happened? Why or why not?
I do believe that this story could have really happened. Nowadays men go as far as killing for a woman. I think if a world leader stole another world leader's wife it could lead to a war.

Love is too young to know what conscience is: Modern English

Cupid is too young to know what sexual desire is; but who doesn’t know that it is first felt with love? So, gentle manager of my heart, don’t dwell on my weakness lest you also prove guilty of it, because your infidelity incites me to be unfaithful to my better self by becoming physically aroused. My soul tells my body that it may be a conqueror in love: the penis doesn’t wait for any further reason, but, rising at the mere mention of you, points at you as the reward of his conquest. Swollen up with the thrill of victory, he is happy to be at your service; to stand to attention when you need him, and then fall beside you. I don’t feel guilty about calling a woman ‘Love’ when for the sake of her love I am always ready to rise and fall.

1. How would you describe the speaker of this poem? What evidence from the poem supports your interpretation?
I think the speaker of this poem is strong. I believe she has a strong personality and a voice. She is using her voice to show she will not be overpowered by anyone. Her poem shows that she will fight for what she think is right.

2.The word “drummed” in line 15 is used in a way that is related to, but different from, the“drum” that is referred to in the rest of the poem. What does " drummed " mean here, and how does it relate to
the poem’s central message?
I think she uses "drummed" in only one specific line as opposed to her using "drum" in others because she is trying to show that the killing is happening and being "drummed". I think she is saying that the people getting killed are getting "drummed" as if the people killing are the drummers.

3.Write an argument in which you either agree with or oppose the speaker’s position toward war. Refer to your own knowledge and experience, or do research to add to your supporting evidence.
I agree with the speaker. I think that war is wrong especially when there are killing thats are unnecessary.

This is my favorite poem because I can really see the image and relate to it. In this poem I can see a visual of a little girl wanting to grow up but once you grow up you wish you were still a little girl. Now that im growing up I need my mom more than ever. WHen i was younger all I wanted was for her to give me personal space and now I never want her to leave my side.
