Alice May is a 58 year’s old women, who is also a widow for six years and the reason is being her husband has died due to an illness, which therefore lead Alice to go through the grief stage due to the loss of her partner.

Alice does have a daughter who happens to live nearby, however Alice daughter just recently got divorced and is now caring two children on her own (non-event). Alice does also have a son who lives in America, therefore he does not see Alice as much she wishes to see her son, which would have an impact on Alice emotional development. Since Alice son is not around, Alice is very dependent on her daughter for financial and emotional support because Alice can no longer have control on her mental state due to the drugs and she cannot handle her finance due to being forgetful. This results Alice to feel she has loss of her independence which would also impact her self-esteem.

Alice developed severe rheumatoid arthritis due to the ageing process, this resulted Alice to give up her job, as a nurse and go into retirement as her job was becoming very difficult and was worsening her condition. Resulting Alice to go through loss of redundancy and mobility.

Loss of Partner

This stage was Anticipated, as Alice knew her partner was dying but it was also Unanticipated, as he left sooner than expected. Individuals die at any time in life either young or old, therefore making it unanticipated. Alice lost her husband due to an illness, therefore she found it hard to lose the love of her life, as it lead her to grief. The impact of losing a loved one can increase duties and pain, for example Alice would need to take over her husband’s responsibilities and whatever they both do together, Alice would now do it on her own, which increases her loneliness.

This impacted Alice to go into the grief stage, which I have explained on the report. Alice is likely to suffer form detrimental effects on both mental and physical health, such as bereavement that would increase suicide and psychiatric and psychosomatic disorders, depression and anxiety. This would mean that Alice would isolate herself, feel very lonely especially when it was only her and her husband at home, which will also increase her depression and gain suicide thoughts.

This can be considered Unanticipated, as Alice would not have imagined to have gained depression and anxiety from the loss of her husband. however Alice would have briefly known how it will feel and be without her husband due to knowing he was dying but people assume that they'd be okay but when when emotions hit and everything becomes real, it changes.

Loss of her independence / Retirement

Alice could not work any more due to having arthritis, therefore she went into retirement and gained pensions but Alice didn't want to retire but at the same time she couldn't work. Retirement had a major change on Alice especially with her self-concept and self-esteem because Alice would lose her work friends which would be another loss to face after her husband. Alice routine would decrease, therefore she’d have less responsibilities, which may leave Alice bored and lonely, especially if her daughter and grand children do not visit often, which would result Alice to go into stress and depression as Alice is isolated and bored. Depression could lead Alice to think about death as she have lost purpose of living.

Alice would also feel she has lost her independence, as her daughter is now responsible in looking after Alice money, as Alice is becoming very forgetful. This would result Alice to feel useless, as her responsibilities are no longer undertaken by Alice but by her daughter, which would increase Alice doubts on her purpose of living and will begin to build hatred to herself for being old.

The drugs Alice is taking for her arthritis would also increase her depression, suicidal thoughts and low self-esteem

Since Alice independence, responsibilities and her socialization has decreased. Alice would have already be in a stressful and depression stage. However if Alice was capable of resolving her issues and concerns then she would not be in that position but since everything is overloading, Alice is struggling to tackle down the issues as her emotions are overflowing.

Since Alice has arthritis, she not able to walk as she used too and it impacts her self-esteem negatively because she beginning to feel old and very weak, therefore Alice is in need of reassurance and affection but since her daughter is going through divorce she has not paid much attention towards her mother. Resulting Alice to give up on life, as she has to struggle to get up, walk and would have to stay indoors as she needs support to go out to avoid potential harm. Therefore going through old age is a difficult time because your abilities and strength is weakening, which limits down what a person can do, making the person such as Alice to feel useless towards others but also a burden on people as Alice needs extra help and support.

Life consists changes that will impact on individual’s lives in many ways depending on the experience. For example going into school is an expected stage (anticipated), however bullying, getting into relationships and other issues that may arise are unanticipated and it will have an effect on the individual’s health and well-being. However some events do lead to positive influences, such as the relationship if it was true love but if the relationship was child play, it would end with the individual experiencing heart break leading to stress, hopeless, insecurities and depression. Some individuals may be able to cope and manage their emotions and move on from it, therefore it depends on how the individual copes with the change/issue. Non-events / unexpected events that occur in one’s life can increase a person responsibilities, social roles and routines, for example becoming a father increases responsibilities to provide not only the wife but the father or divorce would increase one individual’s duties to look after their child. Therefore either way the event is negative or positive it can increase or decrease your roles and responsibilities.
