         <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>Explain the formation of two layers in the Lucas test.</strong></p><p><br/></p><p>1. <strong>Aqueous Layer</strong>:</p><p>• The Lucas reagent is an aqueous solution of HCl and  ZnCl₂ so the water soluble components, including unreacted alcohol and HCl, remain in the aqueous phase.</p><p>2. <strong>Organic Layer</strong>:</p><p>• The product of the reaction, the alkyl chloride R-Cl, is an organic compound and is non-polar. Alkyl chlorides are <strong>insoluble in water</strong>, so they form a separate organic layer on top of the aqueous solution.</p><p>3. <strong>Why Two Layers Appear</strong>:</p><p>• The difference in <strong>polarity</strong> between the aqueous phase (polar) and the alkyl chloride (non-polar) leads to phase separation.</p><p>• The <strong>density</strong> of the alkyl chloride determines whether it forms the <strong>upper layer</strong> or the <strong>lower layer</strong>:</p><p>• Most alkyl chlorides are less dense than water and form the <strong>upper layer</strong>.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>Observations</strong></p><p>• If the reaction proceeds, <strong>turbidity</strong> (cloudiness) or a separate layer of alkyl chloride forms, indicating a positive result.</p><p>• Tertiary alcohols show turbidity immediately.</p><p>• Secondary alcohols form turbidity within minutes.</p><p>• Primary alcohols do not form turbidity easily.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>Suggest the chemical test to differentiate 1-butanol and cyclobutanol.
