However, many Caribbean people have no knowledge of this. Theories argue that there is always a want to return to this native homeland. Hence, people may accept their being in a Caribbean country but may also think of Africa as their home, where they are from. Double consciousness says that it is impossible to have just one identity. This result in a sense of a dual identity. This means that a person can have more than one culture. Each political group is assumed to be affiliated with one particular race or group of people. This type of thinking often causes conflict and tends to divide us as a people rather than to unite us. Also, the political party that is in power in the government is assumed to give benefits and preference to those they are proof their same race. These are examples of race and ethnicity dividing us, although it is said that we have a 'melting pot' of different people.
