         <title>What are the advantages of using learning analytics?</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Learning analytics allow educators and instructional designers to make decisions based on data.  As described in the lecture, utilizing data to make decisions about instruction facilitates the creation of customized learning experiences to meet specific learner needs.  Barneveld, Arnold, and Campbell explain that learning analytics allow for efficiency, impact, and accountability – that is, utilizing data to streamline instruction while anticipating areas of difficulty and proactively seeking to address those issues.  Further, learning analytics provide a means for accountability in learning, particularly when used as evidence of the effectiveness of instruction.  Current technology allows for the collection and analysis of data in a way that was previously unimaginable.  The key for instructional designers and educators in the both the private and public sectors, is to figure out the best way to utilize the data.  Using the data responsibly and effectively can be challenging and may require the hiring of data specialists to help make sense of the information, as misinterpreted data can lead to negative consequences.  <br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>How do you see yourself personally using learning analytics?</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I have used some learning analytics previously in my role as a secondary school teacher -particularly in relation to standardized testing.&nbsp; We were provided with data on where our students would likely score, based on their performance on previous tests.&nbsp; Honestly, I’m not sure the information helped much, as we weren’t exactly told what to do with it.&nbsp; As I am planning to move into training in the private sector, I feel like learning analytics will probably play an even bigger role.&nbsp; Corporations want results, and training is an expensive endeavor.&nbsp; Ultimately, my effectiveness as an instructional designer/facilitator in the private sector will be judged by the bottom line, so analytics will be vital, both in creating effective, efficient instruction, as well as how I am evaluated as a learning professional. &nbsp;<br><br></div>]]></description>
