I believe that the ethical commandment that students violate most often is Rule #8. I feel as though in a school setting, the option to "appropriate other's people intellectual output" is any student's main concern. When completing assignments, students ensure that their papers are made up of their own thoughts and opinions. However, at times it can be difficult to incorporate research ideas without sounding like information was taken exactly from the source. The combination of unintentional plagiarism and student's laziness are the reason students violate Rule #8 the most.

These violations occur for a variety of reasons. First, students find difficulty integrating sources in the correct manner. There are numerous guidelines and policies individuals must follow and students can forget the exact format to cite sources. Also, it can be difficult for students to understand what constitutes as plagiarism or is a violation of university policies. I know many students who simply do not understand the difference between plagiarizing and paraphrasing and this can lead to unintentional plagiarism. Furthermore, plagiarism occurs as students feel lazy and are unmotivated to do the assignments. With the immense workload that students may have at times, they start to feel overwhelmed and result to plagiarizing to finish assignments on time.

The most important thing to do to reduce or eliminate such unethical behavior is to educate students. Having lessons geared towards plagiarism and teaching students the correct way to cite sources will dramatically decrease the amount of students who plagiarize. In all the years I have been in school, I have not ever been taught the proper way to cite any sources. Incorporating lessons from a young age is an essential strategy to ensure students know not to plagiarize and how to properly integrate sources throughout their assignments. Another approach to stop students from committing this unethical behavior is to enact harsh consequences. This will guarantee that students manage their time and give full attention to their assignments. I know when my professors apply harsh consequences to cheating or plagiarizing, it makes me extra cautious when completing assignments.
