Andrew Warhola Jr. was born August 6, 1928 in the town of Oakland, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was born near the home of the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins. His parents were Slovakian immigrants. His father, Andrej Warhola, was a construction worker while his mother, Julia Warhola, was an embroiderer.

They were Byzantine Catholics who attended mass gatherings and kept their Slovakian culture and heritage, while living in one of Pittsburgh's Eastern Europe ethnic enclaves.

At the age of 8, Warhol contracted Chorea - a rare and sometimes fatal disease of the nervous system that left him bedridden for several months. During this time, his mom gave him his first drawing lessons. Warhol immediately loved drawing and it became his favourite childhood pastime. He was also a big fan of the movies, and when his mother bought him a camera at the age of 9, he started photography as well, developing his film skills in a makeshift darkroom he set up in his basement.

It was painted with synthetic polymer paint on a canvas in the Ferus Gallery by Warhol. He got his old boyfriend, Ed Wallowitch, to take pictures of soup cans in every state, whether it was flattered or stacked.
