Desai critiques the American dream that globalisation promises by symbolicallly representing how rats as the bottom feeders of New York, live a more privileged life than illegal Indian immigrants. This is done by satirically representing “eating protein; vitamins and minerals” (Desai, 2006, p.147) as a habit of rats instead of humans in which the rats live a billboard promised life.
