The Congo's long history of conflict starts in 1483 with  European settlement. Before the Portuguese came to the Congo it was a kingdom, and when Europeans came the leaders of the Congo began to sell their slaves in exchange for new inventions, such as fire arms. King Leopard was the absolute ruler of 'the Congo free state' from 1885-1908. His interest was in The Congo's abundant natural resources, and although he claimed his rule was a humanitarian effort, but in realty his rule was devastating for he Congo and its people. Back in Europe things like ivory and rubber were in high demand, resources that were plentiful in the Congo. King Leopold would stop at nothing to feed the demand, and commit many atrocities over his time in power. The people of The Congo were exploited into forced labour under harsh rules enforced by troops called 'the Force Publique', who would punish anyone who under performed with violence. The Congo crisis was a series of political unrest following it's independence from Belgium in 1960. In the time leading up to the Congo's independence, a prime minister, a senate, an assembly and other government officials were elected in the hopes that the Congo would form a society similar to other established western countries. However violence was insighted shortly after the Congo's first prime minister was assassinated and power was seized by Mobutu Sese Seko, who had a lot of support form Belgium and the united states.
