Then I tried to find some sort of shape in the randomness. What caught my eye was the shape that is now the dragons head. I immediately imagined a dragon's head and wanted an eye as a focal point . Then the little shapes felt like they should be very colorful and I tried to shade them, which I didn't execute as well as I hoped, but I grew in that skill throughout the semester. Then I wanted to give the drawing some symbolic meaning and thought about text, hence the writing (excerpts of a made up love letter) and the cut out newspaper on the top. In the end, I just added the shapes in the colorful spaces to give it some more depth. Here I felt a bit of an emotional connection to the drawings, the lines seem to flow naturally and easily. The field trip was a great opportunity to just focus on my drawings and the objects I was drawing for a couple of hours. Here you can see a composition with a female body outline, the brick wall in the background, the clothes lines up top, the figurine dancing that is slowly being encased by the growing roots on their legs. Then you can also see the constellations on the body and the planets around the center of the body outline. I thought it was really helpful, to brainstorm for a the first couple of days and really think about and sketch out all my ideas. Because of that I had a good idea of what I wanted my final artwork to look like and then was able to execute pretty much exactly that. In the beginning, I started with a complicated layer of collage. With this element I wanted to represent the many pieces that go into personal growth, the overshadowing idea of my project. Then I added the sketches of possible careers, these are actually my own examples of my ideas of my future, so this artwork has a pretty heavy personal touch. Then the baby and the pressing question marks were supposed to symbolize the many possibilities that we all have at the beginning and the profound question and choices we all will have to face. For the colors I tried to experiment with opposites, like the green and red or the yellow and purples in the hair. At first I didn't plan for the artwork to turn out so dark, but then I worked with it and added the white, so I also tried to work with the contrast and I feel like it gives the artwork a bit of a mysterious atmosphere. Because of the light colors the picture looked rather positive before the ink, but then tight after I applied the ink the image looked rather negative. Concerning the colors I tried to use the contrast of yellow and purple again. All in all I tried to use happy and positive colors, like yellow, blue, green and purple. I loved how it didn't come off everywhere and the pattern that was spontaneously created. The cutouts were an idea I'd had previously and it seemed like a perfect opportunity to implement that idea, since I wanted to complicate the artwork a bit and make it more interesting.
