At some schools, students must wear uniforms. They are clothes that the school picks. A school in New Zealand has stopped having uniforms that are just for boys or girls. The new uniforms can be for either one.
Girls started to ask why they had to wear a skirt to school. The changes came after that.
The school is called Dunedin North Intermediate school, in New Zealand. The country is in the southern Pacific Ocean. It is made up of two islands. The school is on the South Island. It has more than 200 students who are between 10 and 13 years old. In 2015, several girls asked why they had to wear skirts. They said the uniform was like people's old ideas of how boys and girls should dress.
The school agreed the girls could wear pants. Pants were the boys uniform. A few girls started wearing pants last year.
The change brought problems, though. The girls who chose to wear pants were teased for dressing like boys.
First Changes Caused Teasing
Heidi Hayward is the principal of the school. The first changes almost seemed like getting punished, she said.
Wearing pants meant being teased, she said. Kids would ask if you were a boy or girl, she said.
Students now have five kinds of uniforms. They can be worn by boys or girls. They are shorts, long shorts, a skirt, pants or culottes. Culottes are loose shorts that look like a skirt.
So far no boys have worn a skirt, Hayward said. It would be “totally fine” if they did, she said.
Hayward said she would not want to be told to wear a skirt every day.
The school likes students' differences, she said. They want kids to be comfortable with who they are, she added.
Girl Chooses Shorts Over Skirts
Students were fine with the changes, Hayward said. Many parents were confused and had questions, though, she said.
One girl who wanted the changes is 11 years old. Now she wears shorts to school instead of a skirt.
She thought it was not fair that girls had to wear skirts, she said. Boys got to wear shorts or pants, she said.
It felt good to be allowed to choose, she said. It was about feeling comfortable, she said.
The uniform idea is not new. Many schools in Britain introduced uniform plans like it last year.
