The Odyssey was a great long war epic. Most of the story takes place in the City of Troy. The current belief was that Odysseus was dead. He has a wife (Penelope) and a son (Telemachus). He was trapped on an island he thought he would never leave. There has been a Trojan War. He does return but doesn't allow people to know it was him. The only person who knew who he was is because she recognized a mark on his foot. Odysseus made her swear she wouldn't tell. Since Odysseus is "dead" there has to be a new leader. The only way they can do that is, they have to string Odysseus' bow and shoot it through the rings on the handles of the axes and hit the pole. It come as no one can do it. Odysseus has returned and revealed his identity to them all. Afterward him and Telemachus kill all of the ones who tried. Odysseus kept his title in the City of Troy.
