Concerning the characters of As I Lay Dying: With whom do you most and least identify? by Vannah Scarborough

Your response should be two thoughtful paragraphs. One for the character you most identify with and one for the character you least identify with.

I most identify with Cash. This Is because, like me, he is the type of person who likes to do things in steps. Also he is a perfectionist. Also he has strong work ethic. Also he is the oldest child. Also he is good at building things. He is also the type of person who likes to get attention when he does a good job etc. The character I least identify with is Anse. This is because, unlike me, he has no work ethic. He would rather make an excuse as to why he can't do something, as opposed to just doing it. Even though each character is somewhat selfish in their reason for going to Jefferson. I see Anse as especially selfish as he never does his fair share.

Jules Steffen. The character I identify most with is Darl, who is a little off but not unpleasant. His intellectual search often distances him from other characters, even though he has a good understanding of all of them. And while Darl is detached from the family, he shares a unique connection with people more like him, such as Dewey Dell. Additionally, while Darl might be analytical, he is not free from insecurity and internal instability. He isn't sure of his place in the world, and tries to figure it out with reason. The character I least identify with is Cora. She is such a content individual, satisfied with her little bubble. Cora judges others, but does not make any commentary on her own faults. I might be insufferable, but at least I know I'm insufferable. And I only sing when alone or bored, so there's that.

Spirit Gamble

In “As I Lay Dying”, I identify most with Darl. I don’t think we’re exactly alike, but we do have some similarities. Darl is a little weird. He’s quiet around most people and he has a habit of staring at people. I, unfortunately, do the same thing in public. I have a habit of people watching and staring because I like to make up little Hallmark stories. But to others, this is just plain weird. In Elementary and Middle, most people found me weird because I was quiet and didn’t really talk to people. My cousins thought I was autistic because I wouldn’t talk to them when I was younger.

I don’t relate to Dewey Dell much, mainly because half of the time, I have no idea what she’s saying. I know she’s young and she’s pregnant. She’s not the brightest and she’s a bit brash. We’re both tomboys kind of, but I still have trouble relating to a person I know almost nothing about.

I don’t think there is a single character with whom I indentify the most, because there are some traits from many characters that I have myself. I suppose if I had to choose I would choose Darl because I’m observant and sometimes say things just to make some one angry, like “your mother is a horse”. I also use some uncommon words in descriptions, conversations, and jokes. I have been using the Sadlier Vocabulary books since 6th grade so I have an expansive vocabulary.

I least identify with Cora because I am not very religious, and I try my best to refrain from judging people. Cora reminds me of my mother in some ways because she sings hymns and complains about people behind their backs. If I have a problem with someone then they will know about it and know why I feel that way.

Susa Smith The character I relate the most to is Addie. I relate to Addie a lot when it comes to her current state in the book. I feel like a rotting corpse for a majority of my time at school, at home, and around my loved ones. I often feel like, I too, have holes in my face caused by the ones I love the most. These are emotional and physical holes. Addie also sits around in bed and slowly dies at the beginning of the book which I feel that I strongly relate too. I love sitting around in bed and dying like the cool kid I am. The character I relate the least to is most likely Cora. Since she's kind of mean I would include more but i cant
