1. Children with ASD may not develop phonemic awareness or early phonics skills as quickly as their typical developing peers, and even slower to learn exceptions to the rules when it comes to irregularly spelled or pronounced words.
2. Children with ASD are sometimes able to read words beyond their level, yet struggle to comprehend or understand what the words mean. This makes teaching phonics-based strategies difficult, because the child has already developed a whole word approach to reading, and phonics is often tedious, time consuming, and multi-step.

1. Children with ASD often have difficulty understanding complexities within language, such as multiple meaning words, synonyms, antonyms, prepositions, and pronouns. This impacts their ability to understand and learn new vocabulary, since it is a struggle to understand individual word meaning and purpose.
2. Hyperlexia is a condition that many children with ASD have, and is characterized by an intense focus on letters and numbers, and spontaneous ability to read words but a gap in understanding word meaning. In addition, children with ASD may also have limited oral language exposure in part due to social skills deficits, or focused areas of interest. Explicit vocabulary instruction is a recommended approach for students with ASD.

1. Comprehension is often the most dynamic and complex of all literacy components. This is exceptionally challenging for students with ASD because comprehending requires constructing meaning and relating what they are reading to what they know, which is a weaker skill area.
2. Reading comprehension also includes inferencing skills, and understanding character point of view and motivations. Children with ASD often have weakened theory of mind abilities, and struggle to understand other's feelings and perspectives, which becomes even more abstract during the reading process.

1. Children with ASD may struggle with fluency because they have not developed the ability to read words as meaningful phrases. Some children with ASD are nonverbal, therefore an additional challenge exists because they are unable to verbally express what they are able to do.
2. Fluency can also be impacted if a child is struggling with early literacy skills such as phonics, or if they have a language/communication disorder that prevents them from quickly and effortlessly learning and building on new words. Without developed phonics skills or range of vocabulary, students cannot read with expression and meaning.
