Adding: Make sure the denominators of the rational numbers being added are the same. If not, find a common denominator by multiplying the top and bottom of each fraction by the denominator of the other. Then add them together and simplify, if possible.
Subtracting: Similar to adding rational numbers, make sure the denominators of the rational numbers being added are the same. If not, then find a common denominator, subtract, the two rational numbers, and then simplify if possible.
Multiplying: Make sure the rational numbers are in their lowest terms. If not, simplify them. Then multiply both of the numerators of the rational numbers to get a new numerator, and multiply both of the denominators of the rational numbers to get a new denominator. Simplify the final answer, if possible.
Dividing: Leave the first rational number alone. Turn the division sign into a multiplication sign and find the reciprocal of the second rational number. To find the reciprocal, switch the numerator and denominator. For example, if the second rational number was 1/4, the reciprocal would be 4/1, which can simplify to 4. Once the reciprocal is found, it is the new second rational number and replaces the previous rational number. Then, multiply the both of the numerators to get a new numerator and multiply both of the denominators to get a new denominator. Simplify the final answer, if possible.
