“Ku Bersuara Tanpa Suara”

1. My Progress for week 3
On week 3, I manage to finish the topics as planned last week which are about occupation, weather, schedules and festivals. Now I can demonstrate the signs for doctors, heavy downpour, days from Monday to Sunday and I know how to do sign for independance day.

2. My feelings and thoughts
I feel so grateful as it went as smooth as possible. I am also very thankful to have such a wonderful experience doing it and I think I have learned a lot. Truth to be told, the satisfaction is overwhelming as I am approaching to the end of this project. Looking forward to complete it by next week.

3 . How did I learn and apply the skill of decision making in my EP journey?
The skill of decision making was tested throughout the journey. From the decision to learn sign language itself to its execution requires a lot of decision making. I lasked a few people and did some reading on the pros and cons. With that valuable informations I rationalise every option and eventually came out with this one. It was a bargain. The other thing which required decision making is the timing to learn the sign language. I chose to do it at 11am to 12.30pm because at that moment my house is very quiet as my mom and brother is working from home. So that tranquility eases me to learn effectively. I am very proud at myself as now I am wiser and sharper in making my own decision. I hope I can apply this on other matters too.

5. How did I manage my time throughout this EP journey?
It was easy to be honest as I am in semester break and I have nothing much to do on daily basis. I usually spend my time from 11.00am to 12.30pm practising the signs in my room. After that I proceed with my other responsibilities as a son in the house.

6. My plan for next week
Again I am looking forward to put my knowledge on test for the final task. The final task requirws me to record a video and put everything I have learned into it. So next week I will be rehearsing the sign steps and eventually do the video. After that I am done with this project, and Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia course in openlearning mooc with award me with the certificate. After that I will be doing the required report and e-poster about this whole project. Wish me luck.

1. Your name, matric number, date

Durkayiny Sankar

A167906

Week 3- 2nd August to 8th august

2. Your progress so far

As of week 3, things went smoothly. I made chocolate chip loaf cake for my father’s birthday. Firstly, I searched far and wide for the perfect recipe . I found one on juliascuisine.com . When you take a look at the ingredients you need for this cake, it really doesn’t look like much. Those were some pretty basic ingredients that most of us have on hand. Which makes for easy baking! Pretty basic and I love basic! My family don’t really prefer icing or frosting on cakes. So this recipe was perfect fit for us. I baked this the other day and it didn’t last the day in the kitchen. I think that’s success.

3. Your feelings and thoughts

As weeks passed by, I think I’m getting good at my baking skills. Initially, I thought that taking baking as my elective posting wasn’t really a good choice. But if you ask me now , I’m kinda proud of myself. I love it when my family complimented me on my baked goods.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?

You cannot make progress without making decisions. There were times where things were really challenging for me . For an example, adjusting the sweetness of the baked goods was a huge headache for me. This is because i hate things that are way too sweet. I don’t want my family to taste such thing too. I was scared if i reduced the sugar too much it might disrupt the taste . But still I cannot let it be too sweet. So , i reduced the sugar by a quarter. Guess what? It came out just nice. I mean it wasn’t too sweet or less sweet . It was worth the risk. You can’t make decisions based on fear and the possibility of what might happen. Just take the chances and it’ll be worth it.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?

Managing time was an easy task for me. I had preplanned everything . A week before , i will search and prepare the recipes. Then , i will go shopping to buy the ingredients for the recipes.Preplanning everything, makes things easier and faster for me.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)

For next week, Im gonna work on my E-book recipes.

LANGUAGE BEYOND WORDS
Date: 09/08/2021 – 15/08/2021

MY PROGRESS SO FAR
Throughout week 3, I have carried on learning 4 new Malaysian Sign Language (MSL) topics with BIM Asas 1 Course via Open Learning MOOC. The first topic is jobs and occupations such as teacher, chef, doctor, nurse, firefighter and others. It was fun to learn because the signs are close representations of what the occupations do or look like. For example, the sign for a doctor is someone using a stethoscope whereas a firefighter is someone holding a hose. The next topic is nature and weather. In terms of nature, I learned of the signs for the sun, moon, sea, wind, trees, mountains and many more! For weather and natural phenomenon, the signs which I have learned are hot, cold, rain, thunderstorm, flood, snow and so on. With this, I am now able to describe the weather and apply in daily conversations.

Besides that, I learned how to sign the time of the day such as morning, afternoon, evening, night. I can also signs the 7 days of the week as well as the 12 months of the year. I find it interesting that the sign for Monday to Friday uses the first letter in their spelling so it is easier to memorize them. For example, the sign for Monday (isnin) is “i” whereas for Friday (jumaat) is “j”. The last topic is religions and culture as well as festivals celebrated in Malaysia. By the end of the week, I did some revision using Buku Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia and also conducted self-recap for the 4 topics which I have learned.

MY FEELINGS & THOUGHTS
By the end of this week, I feel accomplished because I have learned 4 new topics which are very new to me. I am satisfied with how I am doing so far as I can see my progression in my journey of learning sign language. The road is still long so I will continue to work hard, learn more and improve myself. 😊

HOW I LEARNED AND APPLIED THE SKILL OF DECISION MAKING IN MY EP JOURNEY
The first decision that I had to make was to choose a theme for my EP. After much consideration, I finally decided to learn Malaysian Sign Language (MSL) because I am interested in MSL and I believe that this skill will greatly benefit me in the future. After that, I spent some time in search for a certified instructor or centre which provides MSL course. This was when I stumbled upon Open Learning MOOC and decided to join this course. Besides that, I also had to determine the objectives and expected outcomes for my EP project so that I have a clear picture of what I want to achieve by the end of the posting as well as what I want to gain from my EP project. To ensure that I stay on track, I decided to make a schedule and set small goals to keep track of my progress. As to how I gained this skill I owe it to past experiences.

HOW I MANAGED MY TIME THROUGHOUT THIS EP JOURNEY
I came up with a schedule to manage my time effectively throughout my EP journey. I have allocated around 15 hours per week to study Malaysian Sign Language. Each week, I learned 4 topics in which I have allocated approximately 3 hours for each topic. I revised the 4 topics using buku Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia for 1 hour. After that, I proceeded with self-review of what I have learned for the past week using MyBIM app. I also conducted weekly recap with my friend via zoom. The review and recap together takes around 2 hours. I usually carry out my studies on weekdays whereas recaps/reviews are done on weekends.

MY PLAN FOR NEXT WEEK (WEEK 4)
Next week, I will proceed to learn how to sign topics related to verbs, food and beverages and household objects to be applied in daily conversations. I will also learn how to sign common medical symptoms and medical terminologies which are beneficial to me as a medical student to communicate with deaf patients. Besides that, I will also start drafting my video presentation as well as reflective writing.

1. Your name, matric number, date

Kausalyaa Chandriah (A167959)

Week 3: 2nd August – 8th August

2. Your progress so far

For this week I made a butter pound cake. The cake turned out scrumptious. Besides researching for the recipe, I also studied a little on the history and origin of pound cakes. Pound cakes can be traced back to Northern Europe for as early as the 18th century. Not only that, an interesting fact about the pound cake is that it gets its name from the ingredient ratio that was used back in the day which required one pound of each core ingredient (flour, butter, sugar and eggs). Of course, in today’s setting the ingredients have been modified to make the cake taste much better then how it used to be.

3. Your feelings and thoughts

Although in the beginning I chose baking as my elective posting to mainly improve my skills, I have a newfound appreciation for this art. Understanding the history and origin for this recipe has made baking more interesting and insightful. I am excited to do more research into age old recipes and follow through to see recent modern takes that have been incorporated into time-honoured recipes.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?

Baking has been extremely therapeutic for me and it would have been otherwise if I hadn’t prepared and pre-made every decision beforehand. Before diving into making a dessert, I make sure I have done copious amounts of research and scour the internet for tips and hacks. This is to ensure I make an informed decision when modifying the recipes. Not only that, since baking is relatively time consuming, I have to allocate enough time for both experimenting and finalising a certain recipe to make use of my time as wisely as possible. This means I decide on which tasks require the most attention and finish it off before moving to less important ones.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?

As fore mentioned, baking is time consuming. To maximize the use of each hour, I prioritize and allocate enough time for each subset of a recipe. For example, a batch of cookie dough has to be frozen for an hour before baking and cooled for 10 minutes after baking. Instead of just sitting around and waiting, I use the resting and cooling time to do the other parts of the recipe like preparing the frosting or cleaning.

8. Your plan for next week (Week 4)

For week 4, I plan on making cream cheese cookies from a recipe that I have curated and bake a cake for my friend’s birthday. I also will be completing my video and work on my recipe book.

Date reported : 23/8/2021

MY PROGRESS SO FAR
For week 3, I have decided to focus more on bread making. I have learned few types of recipes in the family of breads such as Mexican bread/Roti boy, Pizza bread and doughnuts. So far what I have gained is that making bread without the help of breadmaker can actually make the process harder. Although it is do-able by manual technique, however with the help of breadmaker, the process is much easier and takes shorter time. I have chosen to do doughnuts with glazed toppings which is highly inspired by the famous Krispy Kreme.

MY FEELINGS & THOUGHTS
I was initially quite not confident and unsure about deciding to make breads as I have always known that making the dough is not easy. The dough has to be perfectly mixed, put with perfect amount of yeast, perfectly risen just to get a smooth and soft texture of the bread. As a beginner in bread making, I can say that I was itching to get myself a breadmaker but it would be no fun if I didn't know how to mix the dough manually like how people used to do in old times. Plus, I have to overcome my insecurities and give my best for this EP. After all, it is all about learning new things. After my first attempt on making the doughnuts, I can say I am quite proud with the final product eventhough during the process, my dough is not close to perfect (yet). ^^

HOW DID I LEARN & APPLY THE SKILL OF DECISION MAKING IN MY EP JOURNEY?
So far, in my baking journey, I have learned a substantial amount of tips and do's and dont's in baking. After watching tutorial videos, asking questions towards my coordinator, reading articles and recipes, the most important knowledge that I have gained from this that I can apply in my everyday life is that, moderation and consistency is key to everything. For instance, in baking, the ingredients have to be moderately put into the mixture to prevent unwanted tastes or texture. Like dont put too much flour when the doughnut bread gets sticky while mixing it, dont put too much egg as it can affect the final taste of the bread. Everything has to be in moderation and consistent with other ingredients. Applying these in life, I can always remind myself not to put too much worries on myself. Take one step at a time and a human can only handle a moderate amount of stress.

HOW DID I MANAGE MY TIME THROUGHOUT THIS EP JOURNEY?
Baking has been fun but it is super time consuming. For the past 3 weeks, I have set a schedule to make sure everything I planned gets done in time. I would spend Monday till Thursday to watch, read, learn recipes and interact with my coordinator. I would buy my ingredients on Thursday evening, start baking on Friday morning till noon. Then, I would spend my Friday evening to edit the recorded videos I did in the morning which is not easy since I am not an IT person. Then I would fill in my padlets on weekend and start planning schedule for the next week.

MY PLAN FOR WEEK 4
For this final week, my plan is to do a thing that I enjoy the most which is baking cake.

MY NAME, MATRIC NUMBER, DATE

UVARRAJESWARI SELVARAJOO
A168263
2nd August - 8th August 2021

MY PROGRESS SO FAR

As per entering 3rd week of the EP project, this time I have made chocolate chips cookies as a change since for the first two weeks I was concentrating on how to bake a cake. This time, especially baking cookies, I have learnt that baking cookies require much lesser time and much more simple compared to cake. Not to forget, it is last longing too. Therefore, I baked chocolate chips cookies and it turned out great. My family members love it since it tastes great and delicious.

MY FEELINGS AND THOUGHTS

As the day pass by, I think I start to like baking cakes and cookies so far. From a person who used to hate cooking and baking stuffs, it a huge milestone for me as I started to love something I used to avoid this all the time along. Not only that, I felt so happy and satisfied because after the baking process, all my family members taste my baking goods and the praised and appreciated my effort and interest. It keeps me motivating to do much better and more.

HOW DID I LEARN TO APPLY THE SKILL OF DECISION MAKING IN MY EP JOURNEY?

Decision making is a process of life journey. From the starting point of EP journey, when I have decided to take baking course, to choose which kind of cakes or cookies should I bake to how many types or amounts of ingredients need to be shop in order to complete this EP project. Even at one point, I increased the amount of chips or chocolate that I have to put in the cookies in order to make the cookies more delicious and sweet as preferred by my family members but believe me, it was worthy. All of this involves decision making and yes, to be honest, I have learnt a lot throughout the process. As saying goes, no pain, no gain.

HOW DID I MANAGE MY TIME THROUGHOUT THIS EP JOURNEY?

Baking actually consumes a lot of time in terms of planning, researching, getting things set up and finally baking process itself. In order to prevent chaos in future, I have pre-plan things that I need to do for upcoming weekend. For instance, I watch the video on baking cakes and cookies on the weekdays along with searching the best recipe on the net and get the baking stuffs from the shop. While on the weekends, I will bake the cake and at nights, I will combine those video that I have recorded into one and edit them out. In between this, whenever I get time, I will work on my e-book recipe.

MY PLAN FOR NEXT WEEK (WEEK 4)

For the final week, I planned to make brownies and complete my remaining video together with the e-book recipe.

My progress so far
I have been doing great so far with the topics that I learnt for the past few weeks. I proceed with respective topics in BIM asas through Open learning. As I am getting familiar with sign language, I learned 4 topics in a week which are colors, family, occupation and places. There are some basic colors that I can sign such as red, blue, green, yellow and purple. There are some colors that we sign the first letter of the word such a yellow. We sign letter K for yellow as ‘kuning’ in Malay. Besides, I learned how to sign family member and gender. As we might encounter people asking where we were born and where we live in, I learn how to sign 14 states of Malaysia together with the capital city of respective states.

My feelings and thoughts
I have been struggling to memorize the 14 states as it requires some kind of long gestures but it doesn’t stop me to keep on practicing to make sure I can do better and build muscle memory. The quizzes were getting harder as the signing in the video going faster than before.

How did I learn and apply the skill of decision making in my EP journey?
The decision making started from the very first time I decided to learn Malay Sign Language for my EP project. As I have encountered few deaf people in my whole life, I felt tremendously bad as I was not able to communicate with the, very well. I decided to learn Malay Sign Language so that I could communicate with my patients better in future. We need to treat all patient boundlessly so I need to appreciate them equally. In order to learn the sign language properly, I put efforts in searching the most convenient way to learn this language as we are restricted by the MCO now so physical class is not a good idea. I am grateful as there are many organizations that offers sign language online class. I decided to choose learning via Open Learning as I could learn whenever I want and not restricted to any schedule.

How did I manage my time throughout this EP journey?
I allocated 15hours per week to learn and practice sign language. I sometimes randomly practiced with my sister and I taught my parents some basic words. When I encounter any tv shows that have sign language interpreter, I try to understand what he/she was interpreting. Practice makes perfect so I believe practicing help me to sign better.

My plan for next week(week4)

I want to finish a few more topics and record video in order to complete the course and receive certificate. As for the outcome of the EP journey, my friends and I will plan on how to raise awareness to the public by teaching simple sign language via videos that we are going to post on Youtube.

Tan Wan En (A167387) Week 3

Date: 24/8/2021
2) My progress so far
In week 3, I pick up 4 topics: transportation, places and buildings, weather, religion, and festival. As for transportation and buildings, I learn it via the Eddy app and BIM pocketbook whilst I learn the remaining topics via Openlearning.

For the first topic transportation, it is pretty easy as most of the sign mimics the movement of the vehicles. For example, to sign a car, place your hands around an imaginary steering wheel and turn it side-to-side as if you were driving. However, things get tricky when I enter the second topic, which is places and buildings. I struggle and take a while to memorize the signs since there are many of them, and most are unrelatable. After much practice, I now manage to sign all the states, capital and places like school, clinic, post office and many more! I enjoy signing the topic regarding weather because it involves both hand movements and facial expressions. Lastly, in terms of religion and festival, I learn to sign the races in Malaysia, religions practised and festival celebrations. By the end of week 3, I do a weekly zoom with my friend to recap the signs we have learnt.

3) My feelings and thoughts
So far, so good as my progress is on track. As this EP is coming to an end, I am satisfied with the number of topics that I have mastered and I hope that I can fulfil my goal by the end of August. Furthermore, I am glad that I use this semester break to learn sign language, which is beneficial in daily life and my future career as a doctor. The only unfortunate thing is that due to Covid-19, no physical classes are being conducted. When the situation gets better, I wish to join the physical courses carried out by the Malaysian Federal of deaf and interact with others.

4) How did I learn and apply the skill of decision making in my EP journey?
I apply the decision-making skill from the start, where I decided to take sign language as my elective posting project. First, I contemplate between learning the Korean language and sign language as I am interested in both. However, I choose sign language because I hope to communicate with deaf patients well and provide them better care. Next, I learn decision-making skills when doing the quiz in Openlearning. From topic six onwards, the subtitle is not provided in the quiz video and I find it difficult to understand what the instructor is signing. This makes me realise that I previously rely on the subtitles to answer the question and do not pay much attention to how the instructor signs the questions. So, I replay all the videos in the previous topics and grasp the content. Through this, I understand that every decision making requires hard work and experience.

5) How did I manage my time throughout this EP journey?
I split my 1-week schedule into three sections: learn and practise, recap with a friend, and complete padlet. I allocate three days which is Tuesday to Thursday, for learning and practising sign language. I usually do it for 2 hours during the evening as I feel more energetic to learn. At night, I will use 1 hour to browse some videos, observe how others sign daily conversion and pick up in between. Then, I do a weekly zoom review with my friend on Friday. We will go through what we have learned that week and share new signs. By doing so, it helps me to remember better. Finally, on weekends, I will shoot a short video to summarize what I have acquired throughout the week and finish off the padlet.

6) My plan for next week (Week 4)
My plan for week 4 is to learn how to sign occupation, feelings, compliments and medical terminology. Then, I will need to complete the final task in Openlearning to obtain the e-certificate. After that, I will shoot a 10-minute video presentation as the final project of this elective posting.

After watching video and gaining tips from the online baking course called The Art of Baking with Yuppiechef from Udemy, I felt confident to bake it. For this recipe we need to separate the batter into 2 and add cocoa powder in one batch. Even though It looks easy but it wasn’t easy to bake.

POINTS TO REMEMBER FROM WEEK 2!

Preheat the oven 10 minutes before the baking process. Put the cake mixture alternatively (normal mixture and cocoa mixture) in order to form the pattern of the cake. Most importantly, we must make sure the size of mould we going to use to be correct because it affects the thickness of the cake.

MY FEELINGS AND THOUGHTS

I really enjoyed baking the marble cake a lot because I already have the basics of baking cakes and I did not take much time in it.

Date: 28th August 2021

MY PROGRESS SO FAR
I could say that I made such a good progression. Like what I have mentioned in week 1 and week 2, I told that I have problem in remembering those sign languages. But, with the help of my friends and family members and with lots of practice, I think I'm getting better at this. Therefore, I've finished the course at the Open Learning. This week I've done with 4 topics. 1) family 2) places 3) occupation 4) weather, schedule and festivals together with the final task that was given.

Family: i learned to introduce my family members such as mom, dad, brother and sister.
Places: i was taught how to sign state and capital in Malaysia
Occupation: there were few common occupations such as doctor, police, clerk and others
Weather, schedule and festivals: rainy day, thunderstorm, Hari raya, Deepavali, Chinese new year and others

but, even though i mentioned above im getting better but i only somewhat managed to memorize words that i usually use in my daily life or that is related to me.

FEELINGS AND THOUGHTS
I really enjoy every moment i learn this course. the easy approach of the course itself made me fall in love even more. i think i made the right decision by choosing this course as my EP project. i've always wanted to learn new language at least one in my life. hopefully by more learning and practices i can master this even more without depending on books or videos. i am proud of myself and my friends.

HOW DID I LEARN AND APPLY THE SKILL OF DECISION MAKING IN MY EP JOURNEY?
trust me learning this course really does apply a lot of decision making. as example if i want to say something, i need to make a decision like what signs that actually suit the sentence that i want to say. sometimes, it stresses me out. but well this is the journey.

HOW DID I MANAGE MY TIME THROUGOUT THIS EP JOURNEY?
my friends and i already made early plan for our EP schedule. you know like a guideline for us to follow. and as now is our semester break, of course i've been lacking off here and there. but the schedule made really is helpful since this EP course is ending soon.

MY PLAN FOR NEXT WEEK
since i have done with my open learning course, it is time for some video shooting!

I willing o challenge myself to make fully use of the opportunity to learn mandarin properly because previously I have join other mandarin classes but it didn’t go as well as I wanted because I didn’t take it seriously. Im taking this chance to atone myself.

5. Your progress so far

For the second week, I choose to work under Kaunter Vaksinasi . I was assigned with two other partners to gather information about the number of people who will be vaccinated and which vaccine they are taking for each car, and then relay the information to the vaccinator so that they have enough time to prepare the exact instrument to vaccinate the recipients. This is to ensure that the flow is smooth.

3. Your feelings and thoughts ?

For the third week , I am able to adapt to the environment . I now can easily mingle with adults . And for Kaunter Vaksinasi , there is not much work to do . So, I am able to relax a bit.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?

When I am in a situation where I am unsure what to do, I learn decision making by seeking advice from a trusted friend or colleague. For example, when recipients arrived at PPV without the vaccine card. I didn't know how to react at first, but after consulting with a colleague, I learn how to respond to it. When they do not bring their card, we either ask them to go back and get it if they live nearby, or we ask someone from their house to snap a picture of it.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?

Because my volunteering only lasts until around 3 p.m. , I have plenty of time in the evenings and at night for myself and my work. I make a list of what I need to do, set a goal for myself, and break it down into small, manageable steps. Normally, I spend my evenings doing things for myself, such as watching movies, exercising, or going for a walk. Then, during nightime, I get my work done.

6.
