Is a small, aerobic, nonmotile bacillus. It divides every 16 to 20 hours, which is very slow compared to other bacteria. It has an outer membrane lipid bilayer. MTB can withstand weak disinfectants and survive in a dry state for weeks. The high lipid content of this pathogen accounts for many of its unique clinical characteristics.

Involves multiple antibiotics over an extended period of time . The first antibiotic will take six to nine months to complete. The exact medications and length depend on your age, overall health, possibe drug resistance, the form of TB and the infections location. Research shows that a shorter term of treatment is better for the patient, they will more likely finish the medicine and side effects lessen. Active tuberculosis will require several drugs at once. Some of the drugs used are Isoniazid, Rifampin, Ethambutol and Pyrazinamide.

Someone who has HIV/AIDS and or smoke are at risk for contracting the disease. When people with active TB sneeze, cough, speak , spit, they expel infectious aerosol droplets. Just one sneeze can release 40,000 droplets. Each droplet can transmit the disease. The inhalation of fewer than 10 bacteria may cause an infection.

Vaccinations with bacillus calmette-Gue'rin (BCG). Also things such as washing hands and covering mouth if you sneeze. Keeping those infected separate can help in the spread of the disease. Those with active TB should be digilant in taking medication and continuing doctor advised regimen. Preventing anyone from developing active TB should ultimately be our main goal.

Tuberculosis is spread through the air by people who have active TB. It causes chest pain and prolonged cough producing sputum. Occasionally people will cough up small amounts of blood. Tuberculosis can become a chronic illness and cause extensive scarring in the upper lobes of the lungs. Most commonly the upper lobes of the lungs are affected more than the lower lobes.
