In this review we get a detailed description of the novel Pretending To Be Erica as well as a bit of the review at the end that says "...Violet is an unforgettable heroine, and PRETENDING TO BE ERICA is a killer debut." I would definitely have to agree with this opinion of the book. This book constantly kept me wanting to read more, and it was very difficult for me to put down. One of the reasons this book is so intriguing is because of Violet and her development as a character. Violet is a very interesting character because what she is doing is very wrong, but you feel bad for her and as you continue to read you find out more about her life and why she is doing what she is doing. Throughout the book her character greatly changes. At first she just wants to get a job done, a job that she has been preparing for for her whole life, but once she gets to know knew people and get a taste for a teenage girls "normal" life she's not so sure. She starts to feel empathy and love for the people in the book who at the beginning were just pons in her con. This newfound compassion changes Violet and makes her rethink what she is actually here to do.`

This quote, as simple as it may be, really reflects a lot of meaning in the book. Violets whole life has all been small lies, training for the day for her to pull off one big lie. In this quote Violet is digging up the real Erica that no one knows is dead. She is reflecting on what she is doing and what her whole life has been. She is digging up Erica so that her family can get the real closure that they truly need. Violet comes to terms with the fact that almost her entire life is a lie and this experience as Erica, the closest thing that she has had to a normal life, is all fake. This quote shows the realization of Violet and that what she is doing, for almost her whole life, is wrong.

This image of Violets represents who the character Violet truly is. Violet is pretending to be Erica and is almost starting to become her. It's always like she has two people in her head, Violet and Erica, telling her totally different things. At one point in the novel Kerwin hands her a bouquet of Violets. Kerwin is a exchange student at Erica's high school.
It turns out that this whole time Kerwin was another child raised by Sal to perform this con. Kerwin handing Violet this bouquet is another reminder of 'You are not Erica. You are Violet and you are here to do a job.' Kerwin gives these flowers to her to let her know that he knows who she is and that she needs to focus. It's like a punch in the face for Violet to remember why she is there.

The point of view is very interesting in this book. Mostly the entire book is in first person but all of the flashbacks to when Violet is younger are in third person. When reading this you almost feel like Violet is looking back on her life as if she is not the person there. It makes you feel like you and Violet are watching a movie together about how she was raised. You get to be inside the mind of Violet in two different ways, how she sees things now and how she looks back on her old memories. It adds a really fascinating touch to the book because it really enforces the fact that then she was Violet, now she is Erica.

Throughout this novel we get many flashbacks to how Violets life used to be. During these we realize how Violet was raised and why she doesn't think what she is doing is wrong. Not only do we realize what made her who she is but we also realize how different it is for her to be Erica. When Violet was younger her and her father, Sal the professional con artist, lived their life on cons. This means that some days the didn't have a solid meal or even a place to stay, so when she lives life a sErica everything for her changes. They have big multiple course meals amd a huge house to stay in every day. So by having these flashbacks we realize how different Violet and Erica's life truly are and why Violet is Violet.
