Language does not just make up of words, they consist of smiles, feelings, actions, aspirations etc. Communication is not just speech. They include seeing, listening, thinking, understanding, loving etc. Although children have not fully develop their skills, the first part of the poem essentially described what children is capable of - to explore and express in more than a hundred ways. They are like a blank canvas or fresh clay, waiting to be painted or sculpted.

The 2nd part of the poem then described how adults try to use societal standards, cultural norms or standard practice to influence children and their growing process. They instill ideas or rules that are commercialized, such as " to listen and not to speak" or "work and play do not belong together". The focus was for children to achieve an outcome (learn fast, catch up with the developmental milestone) rather than enjoying the learning process and gaining the experiences. This is akin to being a robot, which operates by programming.

Children are not robot, we should not limit their freedom of expression or dictate their way of learning. Each child is unique in their own ways, let them grow in a hundred ways.

- Recognize that each child is unique in terms of interest, abilities and learning style. Therefore, we uses Individualized Education Program (IEP) or differentiated teaching in terms of content/ lesson plans, process, product/materials and environment for the child. However, the framework only serve as a guide for teachers. It should be flexible and should NOT make the child or caregiver feel stressful.

- Try to use more of child lead activities, and not teacher lead. Provide materials and observe how the children react, and develop the lesson according to child's interest, such as using the Reggio Emilia approach.

- Ask the child what they like or not like after a lesson, and make improvisation for the next lesson.

- Incorporate play, natural materials or out of classroom experiences as part of child's learning and growth, rather than through pictures, powerpoints or worksheets.
