They loved one another but he still went after his mother. He even said if he gets her pregnant she cannot abandon him but he was the one who left. She now will have to embark on the same journey he did to find Enrique. I think if she is pregnant that the baby they share will drive her to be with Enrique and his mother. Enrique's leaving to find his mother impacts Maria Isabel more than I think the author lets on to say. She is relevant because Enrique says that if she gets pregnant than she cannot leave her.
