  1. A hopper to feed the cotton.
  2. A revolving cylinder that had hundreds of short wire hooks that closely set in lines to match the grooves cut in.
  3. A breastwork that strained out the seed while the fiber flowed through.
  4. A cylinder with bristles that turned in opposite directions and brushed the cotton from the hooks and let it fly off by its force.
After Eli perfected his machine, he and Miller went into business manufacturing and servicing the new cotton gins. However, the planters did not want to pay the service costs, which put the partners out of business by 1797. In 1802 the state of South Carolina agreed to pay $50,000, which was half the sum that Miller and Whitney asked for, and similar settlements with North Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia. Miller and Whitney had about $90,000! Congress refused to renew the patent, which expired in 1807. His invention made the green-seed cotton a profitable cash crop throughout the South.

When I started reading the articles about Eli Whitney, I realized Eli Whitney had an everyday life until he constructed the cotton gin with Miller. They had a tough time getting the cotton gin to take off however after it did, it significantly impacted workers and the cotton industry. I learned about the cotton gin and how it took a while to use it and get enough materials for the machine. Also, Eli Whitney had a life after the cotton gin by creating 10,000 muskets for the war and other people.  While learning about Eli Whitney, I noticed he cared and helped people positively and for a life with and new equipment production or resources. I enjoyed seeing all of the different photos and learning more about the cotton gin and Eli Whitney. I used Padlet, which was my first time using it.
