It is a 230-foot-wide crater in the middle of the desert near the village of Deweze. In 1971, a team of Soviet scientists set up a drilling platform looking for natural gas reserves. The rig collapsed, and fearing the spread of poisonous methane gas, the researchers set the crater on fire hoping it would burn out in a few hours. (Huffpost,Dec 2017)

Variously and evocatively known as the Crater of Fire or the Gate to Hell, the Darvaza crater is a football pitch-sized natural gas crater that’s been on fire continuously for more than 40 years. And it’s quite a sight. Enough to have lured more than 50,000 visitors to its fiery edges over the past decade, helped by the fantastic wild camping in the surrounding Karakum Desert. While questions remain over the validity of its ‘gateway to hell’ status, what we do know is that the crater was created in 1971 by a group of hapless Soviet geologists drilling for oil. Unbeknownst to them, they’d opted to drill into a huge cavern of natural gas which collapsed under the weight of their drilling equipment, plunging it but luckily not them into the depths beneath. The ensuing domino effect in the crumbly sedimentary rock ended with a series of craters pockmarking the landscape, the largest of which stretched 235 feet across and 66 feet deep.

One of the great attractions is its absolute remoteness. You may see local Teke tribe members who make up most of the 350 people in nearby Darvaza village (Derweze in Turkmen), and even the odd yurt – but that’s it. There are no roads and guided paths, no fences to protect at its edges, no souvenir shops and cafes – just desert and fire. The best time to visit is at night, when the flames spewing from thousands of individual gas leaks light the night sky for miles around in a spectacular and unique fire show.

The Dragon Blood Tree (Dracaena cinnabari), is an evergreen tree found on the Socotra archipelago in Yemen, has been known since ancient times for its unusual appearance and red sap.

It resembles an open umbrella, with a straight trunk, which then branches out as the tree matures. Branches form dichotomously, which mean that they divide in two directions, which then fork again. Leaves form in circular clusters at the very end of the youngest branches and are long and stiff. The tree grows white or green flowers in February, which, over five months, produce berries that turn from green to black to orange as they ripen. Both the berries and the tree itself ooze a deep red resin, which is the inspiration for the name.

Asmara, also spelled Asmera, city, capital of Eritrea. It is located on the northern tip of the Ethiopian Plateau at an elevation of 7,628 feet (2,325 metres). Asmara lies on the Eritrean Railway and is a major road junction; its international airport, built in 1962, is 2.5 miles (4 km) southeast, and its port on the Red Sea, Massawa, is 40 miles (65 km) northeast.

Formerly a hamlet of the Tigre people, Asmara became the capital of the Italian colony of Eritrea in 1900 and remained a small colonial town until 1934. It was the main base for the Italian invasion of Ethiopia in 1935, and the town rapidly expanded as the leading city in Italian East Africa. Asmara was under British administration from 1941 until Eritrea’s federation with Ethiopia in 1952 and was the site of Kagnew, a U.S. telecommunications base from 1942 to 1977. It became the capital of independent Eritrea in 1993.

The city is well planned and converges on the palm-lined main street on which are located the Roman Catholic cathedral (1922) and the Grand Mosque (1937). Other notable structures include the former palace (now a government residence), the legislative assembly and the municipal buildings, and St. Mary’s (the main Ethiopian Orthodox church). Also the seat of Asmara University (founded 1958, university status 1968), the city has a public library and numerous secondary schools.

As in most of the middle east countries, Qatar’s most significant natural resources are petroleum and natural gas. The revenues from oil and natural gas in 2007 helped it achieve the world’s highest per capita income. The country recovered quickly from the global financial crisis of 2008-2009 due to the increased oil prices in 2010. The GDP of Qatar in 2011 was $184.3 billion. The fast growth rate in 2011 growth was attributed to the government’s investment in expanding its gas sector.

Hereditary Monarchy

The State of Qatar is an absolute hereditary monarchy ruled by the Al Thani family. The Emir of Qatar is a monarch and serves as head of state and head of government. The House of Thani established their dynasty in the late 19th century and resumed power after Qatar gained independence from Britain in 1971. The western Asian country is supposed to exist as a constitutional monarchy under the constitution adopted in 2004. However, the ruling family allows no opposition from political factions and bans the existence of political parties.

Executive Branch of Government

The council of ministers serves as the executive body of the government Qatar. An advisory council in making policy decisions assists the emir, an all-powerful leader who answers to no one. The emir, however, should uphold the Islamic Sharia law. Also in the executive are the prime minister, the prime minister's deputy and cabinet ministers who are selected and dismissed by the emir.

Consultative Assembly Qatar

The consultative assembly holds the legislative power of Qatar. The assembly consists of 30 elected members and 15 appointees of the emir. The unicameral assembly has three primary roles according to the constitution. These roles include approving the national budget, passing legislation proposed by the executive, and monitoring the activities of the cabinet members. For laws to pass in the assembly, they require a two-third majority vote. Members of the assembly who are appointed by the monarch serve for unlimited terms while the elected members serve for four-year renewable terms.

Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, current Emir of Qatar
