They were excited to discover and remember so many fascinating facts about each landmark.

All of this new knowledge will help them next week when they begin writing their very own non‑chronological reports about London. The children have also been looking at different photographs of the Amazon layers and the animals and plants which live there and sharing their ideas for describing what they see. A great start everyone!

Year 3 Trip to The Albury Estate

Payment information is now available on your app, please make a note of the deadline of Monday 13th April 2026

PE days for Year 3 & Year 4 are Tuesdays & Thursdays

On Wednesday, we were delighted to welcome David Maguire, a computing specialist, who worked with both children and staff throughout the day.

David taught all 60 children in Years 5 and 6 how to use Tinkercad, enabling them to design 3D models of buildings. In Year 3, pupils used the Microbits app to program their names to appear in flashing lights. Finally, in Year 2, the children explored ARMaker, creating augmented-reality monsters that appeared within their classroom.

David also spent time with staff, supporting the development of our computing curriculum to ensure it remains as engaging and exciting as possible, using the very latest technology.

Dodgeball update will come next week!

Year 5 & 6

Before half term, we had a fantastic time using modroc to sculpt model birds, bringing together cross-curricular art and scientific learning. Inspired by our work on evolution and Charles Darwin’s finches, the children explored how different beaks and body shapes help birds adapt to their environments. Their creations included everything from delicate bluetits and bright robins to various finches and even an impressive mallard duck and sparrowhawk!

PE days for Year 5 & Year 6 are Thursdays and Fridays

Sandfield is excited to celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 5th March, a wonderful opportunity to promote reading for pleasure across our whole school community.

Throughout the day, children will take part in a range of fun activities, including an Emoji “Guess the Book Title” game, Drop Everything and Read—where a bell rings and everyone stops to enjoy their book or listen to a story—and buddy reading sessions, with older pupils sharing books with younger children.

Every child has also received a digital Book Week token, which can be exchanged free of charge for a book at most local retailers simply by scanning the code. Children are welcome to bring in a favourite book from home to enjoy during DEAR time or to share with friends.

At Sandfield, we are proud to nurture a strong reading culture supported by our wonderful team of parent volunteers, grandparents, local solicitors, and students from GHS, who all give their time to hear children read. We also encourage families to make use of the fantastic resource that is Guildford Library, where signing up for a library card is completely free. In addition, all of our iPads have the Libby app, allowing children with a library card to access a wide range of digital books from multiple library catalogues.

If you are interested in becoming a reading volunteer, please contact the school or see the link on our website: Visitors, Volunteering and Work Experience at Sandfield - sandfield.surrey.sch.uk

I am specifically looking for reading volunteers for Key Stage 2.

Many thanks

Miss McIllroy

English Lead
