Children need to be met with and given choices regarding things that will affect them. This can happen in all areas of life, where the child is involved. For example, as a 2 year old, they are able to choose what lunch they have, what they want to have after dinner. In the classroom, they could be posed with a question that is open ended to find out what their thoughts on the subject are after they have been taught something. This can be used as an assessment of teaching and learning and also as a way to get to know the children in the classroom.

To some extent children voices can be heard through, the implementation of student councils, or class representative, or being asked to contribute to community projects or through student, teacher reciprocal relationships. However, barriers to children's voice, can be that children, perceive that even if participation is requested, its a form of tokenism, children are seen as 'invisible' if the content is to challenging, either emotionally or intellectually. Additionally children do not choose the support they need, this is chosen by the adult., and also a lack of resources, also limited opportunities to make decisions on activities, especially as the children progress through the school.

Providing a safe space and leading open and positive conversations with children can be the master key to unlocking children's insecurity. Active listening to what children have to say sounds easy, but putting ourselves in their shoes is more complex than it seems. Oftentimes, practitioners and parents tend to make assumptions about what they think the children would like and neglect the importance of giving them space and time to talk. In addition, implementing creative play daily can be a great strategy to get a better understanding of children's needs and thoughts.
