The Meaning

Alessia Cara's purpose in writing the song "Scars to Your Beautiful" is to tell all the young women that they are beautiful no matter what. That is the overarching theme in this song, as society often tells women that they are only beautiful if they look and act a certain way. Cara is challenging that ideal and trying to tell all women that, no matter what, they are beautiful. Alessia Cara uses emotion and evocative descriptions in order to support this idea. She talks about women starving themselves and self harm because of the unrealistic expectations surrounding their beauty. This song connects to the current problem surrounding our culture, which is the unrealistic expectations surrounding women. Women are often expected to act and look a certain way and Alessia Cara is trying to call this stereotype out and fix it. The lyrics show a sense of non-conformity and self-love, which is the ideals Cara is trying to impart on her listeners.

My Insights

I think that Alessia Cara is writing about a concerning problem and is doing it in a thoughtful way. The song shows a lot of the issues surrounding this way of the thinking, especially when it mentions self-harm and eating disorders. I think Alessia Cara has an important message and conveys it effectively. Many young women listen to music and by writing a song countering social expectations, it will be ingrained in a woman's head. Music is typically an effective form of passing on ideas, and Alessia Cara highlighted on that. I think one concern about this song, and why it may not appeal to everyone, is because it focuses only on women. While I agree that women face societal expectations that are unreasonable, I think this is also the case for men. Alessia Cara did not touch on this, going as far to specify "she" throughout the song.
