Most things you can do require common sense and maturity including, adopting, working a full time job, purchasing homes, cars, and more. 18 is just a number that doesn't mean you are responsible enough to do a lot of big and mature things. In Dear Martin, Justyce turns 18 in the book. Justyce get's many rights and privileges that come with turning 18. As an adult he has to go to court for the accident that happened with Manny, the cop, and himself.
