The group smart goal with my colleagues is family connection and the ILP and piece regarding considering your responses from your own culture will be useful tools for me to bring back and share with the teaching staff to better support our students and creating a new perspective on family engagement. Our students often fall under the "SLIFE" category for "type of learner" and this will provide helpful tools for us to utilize collectively.

I thought the video about breaking language down was very interesting. I am a curriculum coordinator at a private school for individuals with autism aged 3-11, with a focus on applied behavior analysis. I do not have my BCBA license, as I have my focus on Special Education, severe disabilities. When I started this new job a few months ago, I had a really hard time following things when it was behavior terms that I was unfamiliar with, so I would say okay break it down for me or what does that mean. SPED has a ton of acronyms and so does ABA, so I have had a lot to learn, but when asking someone to just explain it to me (kind of an ABA crash course) it made a lot more sense. I had the bricks for the education and special education field, but not for ABA so I was not able to move onto that building of extended discourse. It also reminded me of helping with a writing group with some of our students and how we break the lessons down to smaller pieces and build upon it.

I am always thinking of my own experiences to enhance my own teaching/working with colleagues. I was lucky to have a few of those teachers that put me on the right path and set me on a trajectory for success and understanding. My high school Spanish teacher taught challenging courses but made them fun! She imbedded the language into everything we did in class-from asking to go to the bathroom or giving ourselves a "Spanish name" for class. She is the reason I am an educator today.

This article spoke to me, as a monolingual white woman who works with and lives around bilingual people and those who speak English as a second language. America is very focused on itself, and in many places, seems to disregard the experiences, culture, and values of other groups of people. This is discouraging for myself as an educator and I can only begin to imagine what it feels like to those who are not primary English speaks, who were not born in the US, and those who are not white. It comes back to the concept that we can, and should, learn from our students and their families. Taking the time to build in the experiences, knowledge, language, and culture of others will have wo many positive impacts for the whole group of learners, and hopefully make everyone feel connected and like they belong in our classrooms.

Reading the article by Brianne McGee about Integrating Writing into All Content Areas made me think more about incorporating writing and group discussion into my math instruction. As a math teacher for students with visual impairments and other learning challenges, some on the autism spectrum and some English language learners, I sometimes struggle to find time to incorporate writing about math content and informational writing about solving problems into my lessons. The article among others reminded me that math is a type of language, and that basically all my students are learning the language and vocabulary. I'd like to more consistently make writing about the math we are learning a part of my practice, and the article reminded me about types of scaffolding to support that writing so my students don't find it too frustrating.

I really enjoyed watching the video where the MLL teacher is helping the classroom teacher navigate some challanges she is facing with 1 ELL student in her classroom. Something that I want to remember, that I was forgetting, is that many times we, ELL teachers or reading specialists, have many ideas to share with classroom teachers on how to best support ELLs but I need to remember to select just 1 idea or … Start by building a trusting relationship first.

In the video Sarah says “I had many more ideas but I did not want to overwhelm the teacher” “the other ideas I put in the back burner” and I need to remember to do this. Sometimes there is no time to meet up again and I decide to give ideas right away.

The Language of Collaboration and the steps to build a trusting relationship is the key.

step 1. we want our colleagues to feel validated and supported. If a collague tells us about a problem they are facing, we could say I hear you… Im facing similar challenges. In the video Sarah says “they are being vulnerable when they open to us, so we should also be vulnerable.” 2. Paraphrasing and clarifying: it is very important to listen carefully to what our colleague is saying. “Let me make sure I undertand what you just said….” By paraphrasing in our own words, we are building trust.

step 3- inquire about next steps > this is when the ELL teacher and the classroom think about next steps. “Have you tried…”

I liked what Sarah says in the video “sometimes we dont get to this step

Building a trusting relationship with our colleagues will help us better support our ELL students. Teachers are more likely to share their challengesa and try new ideas in a safe and nurturing environment.

One of the best strategies for teaching academic language in content or language classrooms is helping student develop metalinguistic awareness. As stated in the article, Going beyond translating, metalinguistic awareness “is the understanding of how language works“ and as teachers we should encourage them to use what they know to help learn the target language. In my Dual Lanuage Spa-Eng. classroom, my students and I created an interactive word wall with cognates at the Math Corner. Students really enjoyed adding cognates as we learned new mathematical concepts each unit. Both monolingual and Multilingual learners benefit from this interactive word wall as they were encouraged to analyze parts of words to determine the meaning of each cognate. They owned the word wall; they drew pictures and wrote sentences in the target language.

Little to no information is provided to me about my ESL students, other than if they are FLEP or LEP. I don't know what their specific language skills and weaknesses are, I have no idea what their proficiency in their first language is, and I am not provided with any assistance in teaching these students. I suppose my general question would be how can we make it easier for regular education teachers to work with these students and ensure they are getting the proper care they need? I have taken classes on the subject before and they're great, but it's different taking a class and having actual students in front of you depending on you to teach them effectively.

I was an ELL and I still remember the days when the teacher would do something similar to the Sticks and Spoons activity. I still feel sick to my stomach! Speaking is the most difficult way of communicating for ELs and speaking in front of the whole class was terrifying for me. Plus, I felt embarrassed because I came to USA when I was 15! Now, as a teacher, I make sure that I provide different opportunities for my ELs to demonstrate their knowledge (drawing, writing, creating a plot, Arts and Crafts). I work one-on-one with ELs and help them practice what they are going to say.. before they speak in front of the whole class.

4 Domains of Language and ELL/Special Ed Intersection

I am a math teacher and I work with very few ELLs, so I have not been thinking too much about incorporating the 4 domains of language into my lessons. The Domain Analysis tool will be very helpful in getting me to think about whether I am getting students working in the 4 domains. I work with mostly students with IEP's and these intentional plans for developing language (and things like word walls, sentence frames, comprehensible input) will benefit all of my students. I liked how the 2 subgroups were delineated in one of the articles though. ELL's need accommodations not modifications. My students with IEP's need accommodations but also specially designed instruction.

Completing the tool as a planning guide helped me to see which domains I tend to include more of in my lessons. I am not as intentional as I could be with any of the domains. My students listen to me and to each other, but I don't always task them with a listening goal or ask them to summarize what a peer stated. I'm a math teacher (and special education), and we don't do a ton of reading in class. We do find key words to hep us break down problems. We do summarize our strategies in writing a few times a week, often with a sentence starter or using shared writing. We do a lot of speaking. We share solutions and strategies. There is a word wall students can utilize, but I haven't planned the discussion out. I don't often provide students with sentence starters to help them formulate ideas or to respond to or build onto others. This is an area for growth for me.

If we are not assessing a student's reading competency or vocabulary, then how can we make the assessment as accessible as possible to all students? It was so easy to make the assessments more concise, add pictures and make it look less overwhelming in general. The data we could gather on the students' math and science understandings from these assessments was far more informative.

When you are in a state of stress, your brain is not capable of learning or holding onto information. Fight, flight or freeze is something that kids experience with levels or stress. I experience this at home with my own kids. If one of my kids gets in trouble or startled because they think they might be in trouble, I have seen them freeze or run and hide. When that happens, they are unable to learn from the situation because they cannot process the information, and we need to talk about it later on. Students experiencing stress in the classroom or at school will be unable to learn or process new information.

I think the idea of "see, wonder, think" puts the work on the students to preview the background knowledge and provides opportunities for talk.

The group version (summary) of the video and text at the end of the article reminded me how to better scaffold students writing. As we read, we stop and discuss paragraph by paragraph: who was it about? what did _______ do, why/how/where? If students wrote a sentence after we discussed the chunk of text, they'd build their own version as they read the article (and have more balance between receptive and expressive outputs).

I would love to get some guidance as to what elements of lessons to prioritize and what parts we can cut out. We have been told it is okay to "modify", but there is not much specific guidance as to what that means. For example, should I shorten the read alouds? Should I leave out an application activity? Should I do all the parts of a lesson, but extend it over more than one day, and then not do every single lesson in the unit?

In order for scholars to develop their language skills, they must be involved in conversations and communicating with other scholars. Scholars also want to talk to each other, and capitalizing on that is extremely important, as they learn better from each other. Not only do they develop their language skills, but this allows scholars to build their social emotional skills as well. Students motivate other students, period. Teachers simply must provide the structure and model, model, model!

- -Ashley P.

In doing so, we are removing barriers that prevent effective shifts in practice.

Recently I have obsevational data that highlights our 7th graders spend significant time in each of their classes taking notes in a traditional format. The results show that some learners, but definitely not all, are served by this practice. Stick and Spoons is an interactive learning structure that can be applied to the exact same lessons and yield more equitable experiences - both in terms of engagement and achievement.

I typically look up the menu on my phone and practice my order before going into a coffee shop that I am not super familiar to make sure I order correctly. By doing this, it sounds like I know what I am talking about but I find myself reading the room and using context clues to figure out out an answer if I happen to be asked a question about my order. It was a nice reminder of how sometimes the English Language Learners in our class can work really hard to sound like they are proficient and keeping up but don't truly understand. Keeping those visuals and other supports in place are so important!

This article explains what language dives are and how these "dives" can be utilized in a classroom routine to support students learning a second language. This is a structured routine that I am excited to use in my classroom. Based on the reading, this strategy will allow my students to work with language in different ways, especially constructing and deconstructing phrases and sentences, allowing them to move from learning words in isolation, to applying their learned knowledge into deeper understanding.

The article, "How to Facilitate Voice & Choice in the Student-Centered Class" really spoke to me because it reinforces the importance to provide opportunities for students to take ownership in their learning. Rather than dictating what activities students must complete, teachers can offer choices for their students, and they decide how they want to demonstrate their learning. Over time, this can empower students to become active learners in the classroom. I think students are so used to being told what to do that many just go through the motions of being in class, but by involving them and allowing them to make choices in their learning, they can move towards becoming more active participants in their class. Moving forward, I will certainly keep "voice and choice" in mind when creating lessons.

For unclear comments made by students, we show patience by showing visual options of who, what, where in order for the student to expand and clarify their messages.

My students are visual learners, so we cannot just display words on the wall. we need to set up connections among words and visuals.

Relationship building activites are important for me but I struggle how to balance this and to teach content. The ideas in the article will be benefital for me.

I have stopped using word walls because I feel that they are too stimulating for studnets to look at, so I will figure out how to apply this the new school year.

I was reminded of the value to be found in taking your time at the start of the year. You need to establish and practice the norms for communication and be sure students understand what resources are available to them (anchor charts, word walls, etc.) We often want to plunge right in to the curriculum (or feel pressure from admin to do so) but building community is well worth the time.

I want them to be engaged with each other, not just listen to me. They need to build their own understanding of vocabulary as well as how to participate in class. It takes time and effort to create that atmosphere. We have to provide lots of models and time to practice

We are early in implementing the collaboration plan, but we are off to a good start. We have identified a common time that all 3 of us can meet to co-plan a weekly lesson. The first lesson that we co-taught went extremely well and we are looking forward to doing it again! The next action step is to find professional development for all of us to attend together. We are meeting on Wednesday to look at what we all found and decide on a course/workshop we would like to take together in the Fall of 2024.

I was reminded of several things during this module. The Starbucks video was a great analogy of how language learners experience our classrooms. I was able to think about this acquisition of language from the perspective of the student, the instructor, and a fellow student. I was also thrilled to learn more about word walls. I have use them in my classroom for years but a few simple changes can make them much more meaningful for all students. Using tier 1,2, and 3 words as well as visuals, objectives pull all aspects of language together for learners. Translations can also help. Finally in this module, I learned a lot from the different articles. I was most intrigued by the Artificial Intelligence article and it clarified a lot for me as we have not had any PD in this area yet.
