It is famous for its medieval castle, it's tower and it's Piazza Ducale dating back to

Renaissance. This was a period of magnificence thanks to the presence of the duke Ludovico Sforza, known as “il Moro”, and Leonardo da Vinci. Vigevano is also known for having long been one of the main shoe production centers in the world. In 1866 the first industrial model shoe factory was built there.

In 1680 Caramuel inaugurated the new face of the Cathedral, which he himself designed. 

In 1716, Caramuel completed the imposing dome, with a copper roof. 

The Capitolare sacristy was furnished in 1753.

Other significant restorations were carried out in the 19th century: in 1828/31 the main altar was replaced and the floors of the naves and chapels were redone. 

In the years 1857/58 most of the decorations and paintings were carried out. Also worth mentioning is a subsequent restoration, commissioned by Locatelli, of the roof, of the internal pictorial and decorative cycles in the years 1991/97 and of the face in the years 1997/99.
