Fauvism developed from France, producing art that centered around bright and vivid colors, landscapes, and happy subject matter.
2.) There are lots of new things in this painting. The bright, unrealistic coloring. The expressive and almost “sloppy” brushstrokes – it makes the work look more abstract than impressionistic.
3.) André Derain, Maurice Vlaminck, and Cezanne. You can see their influence in their work with the impressionistic qualities of the brushstrokes in the painting – but they are less technical or “scientific”. Fauvism feels more carefree and lighter.
4.) Everything about this painting is reminding you of how flat it is and supposed to appear. There are lots of orthogonal lines but none of them seem to line up with a singular vanishing point. And by creating the entire background red, with little to no shading, it gives of feeling of flatness and lack of depth.
5.) The biggest rule Picasso broke is the perception of the human anatomy. Instead of sticking with a very traditional portrayal of the female figure (whether that be realistic or idealized), he took it to a completely new level by creating these contorted, misshapen figures that he is so famous for. He also left out linear perspective or any chiaroscuro.
6.) African masks/artwork had a huge impact on Picasso’s artistic style – specifically how he depicted certain faces (meant to look dangerous).
7.) By Picasso creating such a confrontational (the figures are all looking at the viewer) and somewhat taboo painting, it opened up the door for lots of artists to paint whatever they felt. He broke all the rules which allowed others to feel safe/confident enough to do so as well.
8.) Analytic cubism is attempting to depict more than one side of a subject by using overlapping shapes. By stacking flat (2D) shapes against each other and overlapping them, if done correctly, they can sort of trick the eye into thinking we are seeing a 3D (or close to it) subject. By fracturing the pieces that make up an object, the viewer is able to take them all in individually and understand what they are supposed to be seeing. The Portuguese is trying to portray a guitar player sitting on a dock.
9.) Edvard Munch appears to be a significant influence. You see this in the portrayal of people – it’s a crowd that isn’t perfectly posed. They appear to be moving and they are very abstract and rudimentary almost in their shapes.
10. Because the group depicted very complex emotions in their work.
11. He didn’t approve of the hustle and bustle of city life. He found it alienating and portrayed it in this painting and also “Street, Berlin”. Both depict city life as crowded and modern, but “Street, Berlin” portrays two prostitutes in the center. Implying that “everything is for sale” in the big city – even women’s bodies.
12.) His connection between art and music is that not only did he paint/do woodcuts, but he also wrote poetry that became popular/people liked to recite it at large gatherings.
13.) He was clearly trying to express music theory within his painting (the shapes and lines depicted remind me of music notes and sheet music).
14.) It’s less blocky and one note (color-wise), and now includes vivid colors and tons of abstract lines.
15.) It appears that the painting is supposed to be depicting a coocoo clock. The way it looks it mimics children’s art because of the whimsical subject matter and childlike style.
16.) The name stems from the group of Italian writers and artists that enjoyed and wanted to celebrate the recent wave of industrialization. The word futurism focuses on the group’s interest in modernity.
17.) They focused on the “Machine Age” because they believed it was the way of the future and the only way Italy could progress.
18.) You can definitely see the futurism influences in this piece – most obviously in the leash. At first the leash doesn’t look like a leash – more like mechanical wiring or some kind of futuristic metal. Combine that with the intense motion of the dog walking (so fast it almost looks like a fan spinning) – you get the vibe that this painting is very focused on being modern and “high tech” (at least for the time).
19.) Motion: It looks like a man walking
Dynamic energy: It’s hard to tell which parts are driving the figure forward (like the legs and arms and head are fighting for the viewer’s attention)
Social Progress: It looks very futuristic which reflected the industrial changes going on in the world at the time.
20.) Futurism and I would even say Cubism definitely influenced this work. The broken down shapes working together and the almost technological feel of the figure ascending the staircase gives off that impression. Critics at the time were taken aback by this new interpretation of portraying a nude, which caused the painting to become famous through scandal.
21.) His fantasy really comes through by showing things like the village, flower in hand, cow, and face all merging together seamlessly. Some of his artistic influence came from the Yiddish renaissance that allowed the portrayal of Jewish subject matter that wasn’t necessarily traditional.
22.) Communism influenced this painting. It can be seen as utopian because of its whiteness – symbolizing purity and virtue.
