Grendel to me is not someone who is seen. Grendel is a shadow that lurks from corners and waits for his time to attach. Grendel can take the shape or form of anyone or anything including people or animals. Grendal waits for you to be asleep so he man attack the way he did in Beowolf because he uses the darkness to his advantage to camoflague because he is a shadow. Grendel feeds off fear of anyone he is about to attack and can stretch his body to be as tall as Slender man or small enough to fit under a bed. I think this because Grendal waited for night to come before he attacked, and although there was only one Grendal and about 30 men, Grendal easily took them down and brutally killed them. Also,in the beginning of the epic, it said that there was a monter down under being angered by the noises. This makes me believe that Grendal is down under the ground like a shadow waiting to emerge and kill.

I think Grendel listens to "Welcome to the Jungle" by Guns N Roses because I believe Grendel is full of a lot of energy to kill and and ready to attack at any given time. I think he would listen to a rock band like Guns N Roses because I think when he comes around late at night he starts off really quiet and then goes in for the kill causing a lot of disturbing noises. The rock band Guns N Roses are the type to be full of energy and they love being loud to get the crowd hype, for this reason I think Grendel would be a fan of this group. The song "Welcome to the Jungle" relates to being in the streets and it says "Welcome to the jungle, it gets worse everyday, you learn to live like an animal" this males me think of how the people of Scandinavia were constantly afraid of being on the streets late at night because of the fear of being killed. Also, they had to learn to live like an animal because they had to constantly be alert for Grendel. He (Grendel) might also be the type of person to say "I want to watch you bleed" or "I want to hear you scream" the way the song says.

I stole from 4th period, Jaime Velazquez's music characterization of Grendel because he discussed Grendel's traumatic life experiences when he chose the song. Grendel was a person banished from the Earth because of the evil things he has done. For almost 12 years now, Grendel has been killing many people from Scandenavia because he wants to get revenge on the people. Jaime's song choice was perfectly descriptive of Grendel's set of mind and I think it was a great choice backed up by many great facts. "My characterization of Grendel would listen to the song Bodies by Drowning Pool. Grendel is a vicious monster who has experienced no joy in life and only wants to kill. The song talks about being mentally disturbed and having the urge to release anger like Grendel did when the Danes were parting. The main lyrics of the songs are "let the bodies hit the floor" which perfectly describes the destruction that Grendel causes. Grendel was able to kill several men in their sleep and smash them leaving a bloody mess with probably body parts all over. "

Scholarly Article

This Article explained not only the background of the epic but also the continuing part. This article I believe showed many parts of not only monsters but of human kind as well. I learned that evil comes from two places. One place is from misunderstanding the other side. Grendel watched his own father die and wanted to get revenge on everyone. Nobody understood his side because they just considered him a monster who killed for no reason. Evil can also come from Jealousy or anger. Grendel was evil because he was jealous that he and his family were banished from Earth while everyone else lived happily and worry free. Grendel was also evil because he was angry that the original murders were King Hrothgar and the Thanes but yet everyone treated Grendel as a murderer when all he tried to do was be understood. Also, this article explained that the poem Beowulf was an ancient poem that does not have an exact date in which it was made. The first published copy of Beowulf was from Grímur Jónsson and a National Archivist from Denmark in 1815. Many published copies of Beowulf have been printed but there is not an exact copy of the original. Many translations of Beowulf end with the killing of Grendel but in fact, the story does not end there. After Grendel is killed his mother attacks the Danes late one night as they slept and again, Hrothgar puts Beowulf on the challenge to kill this monster. However, Beoufulf is defeated and killed by Grendel's mother
