Describe the Ceremony of Nine. Why is it important, and how did Jonas’s family celebrate it for Lily?

The Ceremony of Nine is when children get their first bike. It is important because it shows they are growing up and becoming more independent. In Jonas’s community, riding a bike means you can go places by yourself. When Lily had her Ceremony of Nine, her family celebrated by talking about how she was getting older. They were proud of her. This shows that even in a strict community, families still care and want to make special moments.

Jonas is very nervous because he still hasn’t been given a job like the other Twelves. Everyone is watching him, and he feels embarrassed. Then the Chief Elder says he wasn’t assigned a normal job because he has been selected to be the next Receiver of Memory, which is a really important and rare position. She explains that this job needs intelligence, courage, wisdom, and the ability to see things differently, which they think Jonas has. Jonas feels shocked and unsure, but also kind of proud. The chapter is serious and makes you realize that Jonas’s life is about to change a lot.

The man says he holds the memories of the whole world and he will give them to Jonas. Jonas lies down and the man puts his hands on his back. Jonas feels snow for the first time.
